I apologize if everyone already knows this, but i just stumbled across this yesterday.

When I first ventured into Hurdy gurdys and french music, music was hard to find. Dragonfly music had 2 vital books,  the Massif Central tune book no. 1 and the Massif Central tune book no.2. Unfortunately these have been out of print since the end of the last century.
I noticed yesterday that Dave Mallinson music has 'sort of' reprinted them in one volume called Bal Folk. Unfortunately most of the modern stuff wasnt printed due to copywrite issues, but it is still over 200 tunes.  www.mally.com Look under tunebooks by genre, the (duh ) french.
From the sample page it looks like it is mainly in C/G tuning.
Mally also has Mike Gilpin's Dansons la Morvandelle.
Another out of print book from the Dragonfly library that has been reprinted is the 'Encyclopedia Blowzabellica'. This you can find at www.blowzabella.com  look under albums, their second book  'new tunes for dancing' is also there.

hope this is of use to any tune junkies out there

Derek

Hi guys,

I forgot to tell you what happened two month ago, here in my place.

My Boudet HG was stolen in 1996, some of you know that. From this time I got quite sad, I have written a solo concert "Le vol du Bourdon" (a joke about : the stolen drone = the fly of the bumble, in french).

The miracle is that this gurdy was given back to me on february 18th. In perfect condition, in the original case, with the strap and rosin !
Mr Boudet had first a phone call 3 days ago from a man who wanted to give the HG back (his telephone number was in the HG), and they call me after. I met two guys on a lonely place (as in a detective novel). The story seems to be : the gurdy was stolen, and the thief gave it to a friend. Few months ago, this friend died, and asked before his wife to give the stolen HG back. The wife wanted to burn it, but two friends decided to help her to give it back.

The HG is now in Mr Boudet workshop for some adjustments, and those who will come in Europe this summer will hear it playing !
This message is for those who had the same story. Don't give up hope !

I haven't written a tune about that yet, but it will come soon...
Maxou

Bravo Maxou !

Amicalement

Wow, great, what a lovely story and I so glad you shared this with us.

It's the stories which create the fabric and richness of life (I am a storyteller).

I would love to her your song about it. :-))))

Well, I don't need to wish you good luck, you got it already :-)))

Maxou, I am SO happy for you. I wonder if I should hope for the return of my beautiful cat gurdy custom made by Chris Allen and Sabina Kormylo, that was stolen in February 2007.

Dear Maxou,

What amazing and wonderful news that your Boudet is back where it belongs. I thought of Trish's cat gurdy as soon as I read your message. I hope this event inspires you to write new tunes!

Hello Maxou,

what a great story! It feels warm to read about that and I think you maybe should not only write a tune about that but maybe a novel.

Just returned from Blankenheim where I particpated a stage with Gilles – that means 5 days fully packed with hurdy-gurdy and other music so I ams still in drone mood – so the story somehow touches me in a perfect way. I am really happy for you that the instrument is back.

Best regards from Cologne,
Uli
