I would like to address this question directly to Michael Scott Rohan, who
just reviewed the Gergiev Walkre in the latest BBC Music Magazine and
awarded the recording five stars both for the performance and for the
recording.

Do you perhaps know if in the upcoming Mariinsky Siegfried and
Goetterdaemmerung CDs, Siegfried will be sung by Jonas Kaufmann? I, for
one, certainly hope so.

Thank you very much for your kind interest and consideration.

Peter, sorry it's taken me a day or two to reply. The answer is that I don't know, but I have strong reason, based on things Kaufmann and others have said, to think he will not sing it. I believe he has no immediate plans to sing it anywhere else, either; and given his age, and the type of his voice, I suspect he's probably well advised. He could have a lot to lose, and little to gain.

Many darker-hued heldentenor types, among them King and Vickers and of course Peter Hoffmann, never actually sang Siegfried; Ludwig Suthaus did, but it wasn't his best role. Likewise lighter-hued types like Windgassen and Remedios were arguably better as Siegfried.

Cheers,
Mike

So far its not on his schedule for next year and I agree with Mike
that it could probably be a mistake. Singing the forging scene in a
studio is very different from singing the two Siegfrieds live,. Wagner
