Why not simply do it the way Wagner tells you to? You do *the music* at that
point the way Wagner tells you to... and he writes some fairly detailed and
co-ordinated instructions for the stage action... and the sung dialogue
doesn't admit of a great deal of reinterpretation...
So what's the possible gain from dicking around with the staging -- as
opposed to the inevitable loss...?

I *did* see this production, of course; and (haven't I had to say
something about this before?) Erda did pop out of the ground exactly
as prescribed -- only a bit of the way up a slope (there is no flat
stage floor) and from the waist up, with bits of forest floor sliding
down around around her. The effect was no worse than the classic
"green torso", and in the context of the relationship she's about to
have with Wotan her intimate way with him was not at all unwarranted
-- earthmotherly, you might say. It helped that this one wasn't that
bad-looking. All in all, while it's possible to object to such a
thing, with all the other distortions bouncing around world stages at
the moment, it does seem impossibly small-minded and fusspotting.
