Campbell: Well, people do experience it. Those in the Middle Ages who
experienced it were usually burned as heretics. One of the great
heresies in the West is the heresy that Christ pronounced when he said
``I and the Father are one.'' He was crucified for saying that. In
the Middle Ages, nine hundred years after Christ, a great Sufi mystic
said, ``I and my beloved are one,'' and he, too, was crucified. As he
was going to the cross, he prayed, ``O my Lord, if you had taught
these people what you have taught me, they would not be doing this to
me. And if you had not taught me, this would not be happening to me.
Blessed is the Lord and all his works.'' Another of the Sufi mystics
said, ``The function of the orthodox community is to give the mystic
his desire, which is a union with God, through mortification &
death.''

Tin [*Sn* (Latin: Stannum)] and atomic number 50.
*Stannum* is derived from Cornish *STEAN* , &
is proof that Cornwall in the 1st centuries AD
was the main source of tin.
Zinc [*Zn* ] was first documented by Paracelsus.
The word is probably derived from the German zinke,
& supposedly meant "tooth-like, pointed or jagged."
Zink could also imply "tin-like" because of
its relation to German *ZINN* meaning tin.

Shin ש (letter) (Gematria value: 300)
.............................................
Shin (also spelled *SHEEN* ) is the 21st letter in many Semitic
abjads, including Phoenician, Aramaic/Hebrew ש, & Arabic ﺵ .
Its sound value is a voiceless sibilant, IPA: [ʃ] or /s/.
The Phoenician letter gave rise to the Greek Sigma (Σ), Latin S,
and the letter Sha in the Glagolitic & Cyrillic scripts.
The South Arabian & Ethiopian letter Śawt is also cognate.
The Phoenician šin letter expressed the continuants of
two Proto-Semitic phonemes, & may have been based on
a pictogram of a [BOAR's]tooth (in modern Hebrew *SHEN* ).
The Encyclopedia Judaica, 1972, records
that it originally represented a composite *BOW* .
Shin ש as a prefix, bears the same meaning as the relative
pronouns "that", "which" and "who" in English. In colloquial
Hebrew, Kaph & Shin ש together have the meaning of "when".
Shin ש is also one of the seven letters which receive a
special crown (called a tagin) when written in a Sefer Torah.
See Gimmel, Ayin, Teth, Nun, Zayin, and Tzadi.
Shin ש also stands for the word Shaddai, a name for God. Because of
this, a kohen (priest) forms the letter Shin with his hands as he
recites the Priestly Blessing. In the mid 1960s, actor Leonard
Nimoy used a single-handed version of this gesture to create the
Vulcan Hand Salute for his character, Mr. Spock, on Star Trek.
In Jewish tradition the letter Shin ש is inscribed on the Mezuzah, a
vessel which houses a scroll of parchment with Biblical text written
on it. The text contained in the Mezuzah is the Shema Yisrael prayer,
which calls the Israelites to love their God with all their heart,
soul and strength. The mezuzah is situated upon all the doorframes
in a home or establishment. Sometimes the whole word Shaddai
will be written.
The *SHEMA* Yisrael prayer also commands the Israelites to write
God's commandments on their hearts (Deut. 6:6); the shape of the
letter Shin ש mimics the structure of the human heart: the lower,
larger left ventricle (which supplies the full body) and
the smaller right ventricle (which supplies the lungs)
are positioned like the lines of the letter Shin ש .
A religious significance has been applied to the fact that there are
three valleys which comprise the city of Jerusalem's geography: the
Valley of Ben Hinnom, Tyropoeon Valley, and Kidron Valley, and that
these valleys converge to also form the shape of the letter Shin ש ,
and that the Temple in Jerusalem is located where the dagesh
(horizontal line) is. This is seen as a fulfillment of passages such
as Deuteronomy 16:2 that instructs Jews to celebrate the Pasach at
"the place the LORD will choose as a dwelling for his Name" (NIV).
In the Sefer Yetzirah the letter Shin ש is King over Fire, Formed
Heaven in the Universe, Hot in the Year, and the Head in the Soul.

According to Judges 12:6, the tribe of Ephraim could not differentiate
between Shin ש & Sin (i.e., Shin ש with a dot above the left-hand side
of the letter); when the Gileadites were at war with the Ephraimites,
they would ask suspected Ephraimites to say the word shibolet;
an Ephraimite would say sibolet and thus be exposed.
From this episode we get the English word *Shibboleth* .
The Proto-Sinaitic glyph,
& possibly its Proto-Canaanite descendant glyph,
according to William Albright, may have been based on the
hieroglyph for the uraeus in Semitic called shamash *SUN*
, ultimately reflecting Proto-Semitic *śamš- [ *SAMSON* ].

<<In Alan Young's Tudor & Jacobean Tournaments recounts Oxford's
participation in one of his last tournaments (prior to his
imprisonment in the Tower), at Whitehall, on 22 January 1581.
The circumstance of this contest was the Earl of Arundel's "friendly"
challenge to knightly gallants as one Callophisus, a Lover of Beauty,
to which challenge responded, among others, Lord Windsor, Sir
Philip Sidney, Sir William DRURY, and Lord Oxford. Young tells us
that all of the respondents to Arundel's challenge at Whitehall
styled themselves, rather unpretentiously (save one!),
by such unimaginative nomenclature as the Red Knight,
the White Knight, and the Blue Knight-- but, according
to Young, "the Earl of Oxford appeared in the Whitehall
tiltyard as the Knight of the *TREE OF THE SUN* ... ">>

<<Richmond has a long and rich history. Originally call *SHENE* ,
it was the site of two mediaeval royal palaces built by Edward III
& Henry V. When the second of these was severely damaged by fire
in 1497 Henry VII erected a magnificent new palace in its place
and in 1501 renamed the palace (and the village) 'Richmond'
after his Earldom in Yorkshire.>>

<<The palace built by Henry VII to replace the manor of *SHENE*
destroyed by fire at Christmas, 1497. And even that was not
the original *SHENE* Manor. Before that stood the manor where
Edward III died, deserted even by his servants who, led by
his mistress Alice Perrers, had snatched the rings off his
fingers. Edward's grandson, Richard II and his wife, Anne of
Bohemia, used *SHENE* as their favourite summer residence and
it is recorded that each day they fed ten thousand guests,
which hardly seems possible. But she was an extraordinary
woman & much beloved of Richard, which is conveniently
forgotten when people talk about his sexuality.
He destroyed *SHENE* after she died of the plague here in 1394.
In the Undercroft Museum of Westminster Abbey there is a
painted wooden funeral effigy of her, showing a very serious,
perhaps rather sad looking woman with a long face and
a rather endearing double chin.
Before he set out for Harfleur & Agincourt, Henry V founded
2 religious communities near *SHENE*. One was a Carthusian
monastery on the site of the Old Deer Park, and the other
was *SION* monastery for the Bridgettine order of monks,
nuns & lay brothers. In the centuries following the
Dissolution, *SHENE*'s priory buildings became dilapidated
and in the 18th century George III demolished those remaining
to use the area as pasturage. The hamlet of West *SHENE*
was also demolished and now *SHENE* is remembered only in
the names of North & East *SHEEN* and *SHEEN* Common.>>
