Dear hugin-ptx members.

Just a heads-up for those who haven't seen it: Google Summer of Code
2012 is on [1]. This means that we as a community at least have to
think about if we would like to start collecting ideas and ways of
finding mentors as well as students. If we want to take part again.

Greetings from wintery Switzerland,
Habi (a bit on the run, since he leaves for three weeks of holidays
tomorrow and will return with many panos to stitch)

PS: If Christoph Spiel reads this: I *still* owe you money from last
years GSoC. Please contact me!

There are lots of tasks remaining that would make good summer of
code projects, what we really need are some new mentors to work with
the students. Any volunteers?

Dear All

The response to my email was non-existent. Since the deadline is over now, hugin won't take part in the GSoC 2012…

Mentoring a Summer of Code student can take up a lot of time, I
couldn't commit to it again. It is better to skip it for a year
than be unable to give the students the attention they deserve.

I agree. And one reason why it takes a lot of time in this specific
project is because of the code base: It's scattered over two projects
(PT and hugin) and very sparsely documented. A student would have to
ask a lot of questions to get anywhere within three months, even if
they'd not do anything else in the meantime. And the mentor would have
to have a good overview of PT and hugin, and I think there are very
few people around who could boast that.

There is a great deficit in hugin/PT, and that's a 'way in' for anyone
who wants to touch the code. What we need isn't new features (which
apparently, is what GSoC is for) but documentation, consolidation,
refactoring. I've been told GSoC is not for these.

And we need bug fixing. I'd say it's mainly usability bugs. Quirks in
the UI, ugly bits which haven't been fixed in years, things which are
awkward but should be simple... I must admit I've stopped bothering
sending in 'bug reports' of these types of problems, but to new users
they must be annoying. And this is another field GSoC isn't meant for.

So how about new features? One new feature I have intimate knowledge
of is the python interface. It's been around now for a year. T. Modes
has made sure it can be compiled and run on Windows, but AFAIK the
windows binaries which are distributed don't contain it because their
maker has some statically-vs-dynamically-linked issue with them. Mac
OS version? Abandoned for lack of ability to make it compile on a Mac.
Linux version? It runs, but noone has figured out a way to let the
plugins show their console output in a window; the message box popping
up if the plugin returns something apart from zero is often hidden
behind other windows, there still isn't an agreed-upon way to pass
parameters to a plugin. I was hoping that someone would feel compelled
and competent to tackle these issues, but it's all been left in this
half-ready state, as if I was supposed to fix it myself if I wanted to
see the python interface going anywhere. It's discouraged me from
sharing more code. It makes me doubt new code is wanted, so not
participating in GSoC seems logical.
