Hi Hugin translators and those who want to become a Hugin translator,

In a few weeks we will start the release process (with Betas and Release Candidates) of the new Hugin 2013 version featuring the new Gui design.
Due to this new Gui a fairly large number of new strings need to be translated.
Some languages have some lag already with regard to the number of translated strings.
That's why I now already start to shake up the community so that the translations are (hopefully) up-to-date once we really start the release cycle.

For new translators (Welcome):
The LXDE.org wiki has an excellent page on how to translate the .po files used by many Linux/Unix/BSD based systems and which is also the underlying internationalisation (internationalization) framework for Hugin.
Please read this article: <http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Translate_*.po_files_with_Poedit>.

Note that poedit is not only available for Linux/Unix but also for Windows and Mac OS X.

Kind regards,
Harry

Thank you for the reminder!

I like to keep the Danish file up to date with smaller, more frequent updates, rather than one big update before each release. Would it be possible to receive an automated mail every time da.po has been changed in the repository? Such a mail wouldn't have to contain the changes, just a simple "da.po has been changed in the Hugin repository" would be enough.

Hi Thomas,

thanks for the reminder, I'll have a look at the DE translations this
evening.

How about the release notes, is a new file already available somewhere?
Sorry that I haven't checked it myself yet...

@Thomas P.

This is an often wish. But sourceforge does not offer such a service
AFAIK.
Maybe there could added a hook and a mail send a specialized mailing
list. But I have no experience with such hooks.

@Carl
> How about the release notes, is a new file already available somewhere?

No, the release notes have not been written. I don't know if Harry
started it already.
So there are not yet available.

Hi,

to everyone who thinks about contributing to the translation of Hugin:
even a few strings can help, so if you are unsure about this or that
string, just skip it. Others may jump in, and often enough it just takes
a few days or weeks for a good idea how to translate a special term or
sentence...

Make sure you have a look at the Hugin translation guide in the
panotools wiki:
http://wiki.panotools.org/Hugin_translation_guide

If unsure about certain strings, just ask here in this thread.

Cheers,
Carl

Hi,

is there an easy way to list in the poedit or other tool the messages that are untranslated or fuzzy? I tried with poedit 1.4.6 under FreeBSD and didn't find a filter or something like that.

Thanks,

In POEdit you should be able to simply sort the translations by their "types" (ie translated, untranslated or fuzzy).

Hi Carlos

I find the tool Lokalize to be a bit easier to use than POEdit. It also has options for sorting by translated, untranslated and fuzzy.

The current stable version is Poedit 1.5.5, see http://www.poedit.net
and https://github.com/vslavik/poedit/blob/master/NEWS

In 1.4.6 I see no way how to manually sort strings in a po file, it's
done automagically in the order untranslated / fuzzy / translated.
Poedit sorts again as soon as you save. That's the behaviour on OS X.

Clicking on the column "Translation" doesn't do anything, but in the "View" menu you can choose to order by file order, source or translation. You can also select "untranslated entries first".
I just installed 1.5.5 on Windows and by default I have "sort by translation" and "untranslated entries first". So I first have untranslated, then fuzzy (in color), then untranslated.

Attached is an updated French version. I only translated things
through PoEdit, I didn't really check Hugin's GUI, so I usually don't
really know the context.

In the translation file, there's "Date, image was taken". I guess the
colon should be removed?

I'm not sure about "Top boundary must be smaller than bottom.". It
sounds weird that something "top" must be smaller than something
"bottom", but I don't know the context (which is always a problem when
translating things), so I'm not sure whether the translation is fine
or not.

There's also some similar strings (here are some of them)
"Date, image was taken" and "Capture date" => at least the translation
is the same
"ISO" and "ISO Speed"
"Color" and "Colour"
"Mask size" and "Mask size:"
"Focal length" and "Focal length:"
"Camera and Lens data" and "Camera and Lens variables:" => I don't
know where it's used nor if the translation should really be
different.
"Right:" and "right:"
"enblend" and "Enblend"
"enfuse" and "Enfuse"
"Save camera to database" and "Save camera into database file"
"Save lens to database" and "Save lens into database file"
"Exposure value (Eev)" and "Exposure (Eev):"
"Lens Project Files (*.ini)|*.ini|All files (*)|*" and "Lens Project
Files (*.ini)|*.ini|All files (*.*)|*.*" => those filters probably are
the same
"Output format" and "Output Format"
"Drag to move images (optionally use shift to constrain), or roll with
right-drag or Ctrl-drag." and "Drag to move images (optionally use
shift to constrain), or roll with right-drag or ctrl-drag." => just
Ctrl vs ctrl
"The project does not contain any active images.\n
Please activate at least one image in the (fast) preview window.\n
Optimization canceled." and "The project does not contain any active images.\n
Please activate at least 2 images in the (fast) preview window.\n
Optimization canceled." => this one may just be fine actually, it
depends on the context

There are probably others with just a lower/upper case difference,
with or without ":", ...

The top border of the crop have to be smaller than the bottom one.
There are maybe some more. The upper/lower case can be corrected. But
I would propose to postpone this to after the release to not disturb
the translators too much.
With and without ":" is a little bit more complicated. On some place
"right", on other "right:" is used. This would require some code to
change the text at run-time to prevent the issue with the ":". But I
think this would be overkill. I hope/assume it would be easier, if the
translators would translate 2 strings.
Maybe we can collect such strings in the bug tracker and then fix all
at once.

Hi translators,

just a further reminder.
In the last month only some language files were updated. I want to
thank all translators.

Six language are complete now:
cs_CZ.po
da.po
de.po
hu.po
it.po
pt_BR.po
1383 translated messages.

For some language there is only a little work to do:
en_GB.po
65 translated messages, 16 fuzzy translations, 1302 untranslated
messages.
es.po
1269 translated messages, 65 fuzzy translations, 49 untranslated
messages.
fr.po
1378 translated messages, 5 fuzzy translations.
nl.po
1382 translated messages, 1 fuzzy translation.
ru.po
1366 translated messages, 12 fuzzy translations, 5 untranslated
messages.

And then there are languages which require more work:
bg.po
509 translated messages, 505 fuzzy translations, 369 untranslated
messages.
ca_ES.po
300 translated messages, 576 fuzzy translations, 507 untranslated
messages.
eu.po
1032 translated messages, 173 fuzzy translations, 178 untranslated
messages.
fi.po
811 translated messages, 307 fuzzy translations, 265 untranslated
messages.
ja.po
1134 translated messages, 168 fuzzy translations, 81 untranslated
messages.
ko.po
510 translated messages, 491 fuzzy translations, 382 untranslated
messages.
pl.po
839 translated messages, 329 fuzzy translations, 215 untranslated
messages.
ro.po
674 translated messages, 397 fuzzy translations, 312 untranslated
messages.
sk.po
1018 translated messages, 236 fuzzy translations, 129 untranslated
messages.
sl.po
479 translated messages, 479 fuzzy translations, 425 untranslated
messages.
sv.po
1101 translated messages, 196 fuzzy translations, 86 untranslated
messages.
uk.po
371 translated messages, 574 fuzzy translations, 438 untranslated
messages.
zh_CN.po
1144 translated messages, 173 fuzzy translations, 66 untranslated
messages.
zh_TW.po
964 translated messages, 325 fuzzy translations, 94 untranslated
messages.

If there is no further update for some language files with a low
coverage they will be removed from the default install for the next
release.

Plenty to do, right. But wouldn't it be better to still include those
language versions (I boldly shortened the above list) so existing
translators see their results and also get a quick idea where further
work is needed?

I think a request for translators in the read me would be better.

some language file were the last time updated around 2008.
They cover now only one third of all strings (you have also to take
the fuzzy strings into account, they don't appear translated in the
application):
ko.po 37 % translated
bg.po 37 % translated
sl.po 35 % translated
uk.po 27 % translated
ca_ES.po 22 % translated

So potential translators or also users should have seen the issue
since years. But there was no activity since 4 or 5 years.
So I was referring only to these languages. (For these only a small
part of the strings is translated. Most of the strings will appear in
English.)

And I don't think, that a note in the README will help. First, there
was no activity since several years despite the lot of missing
strings.
And second, most people don't read the README.

The other mentioned languages have a better coverage:
zh_CN.po 83 % translated
ja.po 82 % translated
sv.po 80 % translated
eu.po 75 % translated
sk.po 74 % translated
zh_TW.po 70 % translated
pl.po 61 % translated
fi.po 59 % translated
ro.po 49 % translated

But for these languages there is also room for improvements.

OH, seems like some of the work being repeated. Sorry for not noticing this thread
If there is more than one Traditional Chinese translator, maybe we have a discussion about some of the word use for the program?
