Description: This group seeks to dispel the myth that you need an overly supportive, cushioned, orthopedic shoe-boot in order to push the limits of human potential in running and exploring the world.

We welcome discussions on topics brought up in Christopher McDougall's best-selling book "Born to Run"

flag So, you wanna start running barefoot?
So, you wanna start running barefoot? Firstly, before you begin, you want to evaluate what it is that is leading you to even accept the logic behind the concept of barefoot running. We all know that barefoot running has gotten a lot of attention lately. Much of it is valid and deserves your attention.... more »

Orton's Foot exercises
I've been doing Orton's foot exercises this week. I made my own slant board out of scraps. No need to buy one. I think standing on the balls of your feet on a sideways incline can be very useful. I noticed on todays' barefoot run a stronger big toe contact with the ground.

Possible Posterior Tibial Tendon: Let nature take its own course or head to the doctor
Folks, So while leaving the gym last Thursday, in my energetic run out, I kinda stepped badly on a side railing while avoiding someone who was entering, and I instinctively knew I had done something stupid. Funnily, I am perfectly okay walking barefoot but walking around lots in formal shoes or running (to the aircraft gate) makes it flare up a bit.... more »

Minimalist camping - thinking about doing an overnight trail run
I have not done much camping recently, though when I was younger I did several times a year. But all the camping I have done was with a fairly heavy equipment load and lots of portable comforts. I was thinking about trying an overnight trail run done with the bare minimum, probably up in North Georgia in the mountains and foothills,... more »

Side stitch
In my experiences, a proper breathing may eliminate side stitch. It also requires correct posture, but I could be wrong.

Water on the Run
Normally I don't take water on my runs. Part of it is that the weather in Vermont doesn't really call for it. The last couple of long races I've done (half - in Oct - and a full - Sunday) I've managed to go about 8/9 miles without water. At that point I'll grab a cup of water and dump most of it on my head get a bit in my... more »

OT: Chicago Restaurant Recommendations
I was out in Chicago this weekend. Use Melissa's reviews as my starting point for eating... Unfortunately, the NRA was in town, so all the restaurants she recommends were booked up, the only one we could get into was the Purple Pig, which has a sign-up sheet, no reservations. Got to the hotel, and ran the 1/2 mile to the PP to sign up. It was pretty terrific,... more »

No two the same
Periodically I go through my book shelves to get rid of books I probably won’t re-read. While doing this yesterday I noted that I’ve collected quite a few running books. Comparing the form instructions of these along with online blogs and videos is interesting. What’s most interesting is this: No... more »

Personal barefoot Running Improved...
Well today was my first day after 10 of not running barefoot on trails that last you I could only rune 1 day a week barefoot. It was a "hard" brain day, and I simply headed out on the bike to the falls/trailhead to see if I would improve enough to do anything. Feet were tender (from the 10 days of decomposed granite trail running). I did a few miles in the moccasins, enjoyed a few pipes and came home. i'm hoping I can soon get the the point of doing it all barefoot save when the temps are too chilly.... more »
