I was surprised to read the date of this article: 2003. I'd like to
know what USATF members and "higher-ups" thought of this as well. Did
they just dismiss it out of hand? Were there any coaches who suddenly
decided "Maybe my runners should ditch those (insert overpriced shoe
brand here)?" Probably not, given that the author states in the
conclusion that "running barefoot full-time may not work for
everyone" (more or less). But it might be a start. The fact that the
regulating body for high school running sports mandates the use of
shoes by all high school runners means that it will probably be a good
long while before we see any high school athletes racing barefoot (or
at least in VFFs) here in the States, which means it will probably
also be a long time before we see elite runners racing barefoot as
well.
