Hello to all members! I am one of your readers coming out from the shadow! ;)
Quickly introducing myself as a runner, I run 3 to 4 times a week averaging 120 to 240 miles per months... about %40 of it being done barefoot on a fairly smooth road surface while the rest is performed with running flats, sometimes trails with NB Minimus. I am super happy with my running overall, in 3 years my average pace on runs above 10 miles went from 9:15 to 7:35 Minutes per miles on my best days and got only 2 minor injuries in the past 4 years. I nose breath %100 on all runs, I use gels cautiously and only one with every runs over 9 miles. My height is 6", I weight in between 149lbs to 168 eventually during winter time around Christmas at worse. Too busy to attend races and work at night a lot so it is very hard for me to wake up early for races... or even follow any kind of schedules such as group running, core conditioning or yoga classes. So here we are! I am a lonely runner! and that is how I deal with my *Love of running...* mostly alone in the space and I think like it that way.
I do read you guys and I like it a lot! I also read a lot of books you talk about in your conversations, actually in the middle of Anatomy for runners by Jay Dicharry and it is excellent!
*I was mentioning core conditioning because this is the origin of this first post*
*Now explaining:* The only problem I have in my running activity is I think and I must write *I feel !* even I REALLY FEEL! is in my upper body specially core muscles... it is weak! so so so bad! I am *ashamed!* of myself really... :^/
I knew, I know that I have to so something! So! last week out of despair I ordered 3 cd's from McMillanRunning featuring Runner's Core Routine. But! SHAME ON ME! :))) In the first CD at the very first level there is 2 exercises that I can't even do! this is crazy!
those two exercises are: Sit Up With a Twist and second is Standing up writing in the air "I RUN FAST" with each foot... I just can't balance enough to run "FAST" actually even the "N" of "RUN" is a problem.... no! I am not kidding.
I think for those two exercises I am almost at a point to need a physical therapy service in order to slowly build up enough strength to someday be able to start doing properly this Level1 CD.
*My Questions are: * 1) Do you guys have any tips? I am open to hear anything...
2) Could you recommend me some good CD's preferably that are ground level or fundamental for core muscles buildup? (I favor CD's as I will bring my portable CD player at my 24/7 gym at night)
3) If following classes is a solution I might find an affordable Yoga or Pilates meeting but which type of Yoga or classes would be the best for my situation?
4) I also read that weight training can be useful for runner but only in a certain way and certain exercises. Could you recommend me a good source of runners specific information's about that? CD's or Books...
5) Is there a sport I could do in addition that would buildup my core & upper body while meeting the requirements below? Be outdoor, Be in motion, Cost only few bucks a bit like running...
Please be wild in your advises! I need them! I want to correct this condition...Sincerely I am totally ashamed of myself. but I need tips that will help on long term and adapted to serve my running.
Thanks for reading my post Cheers! Lucian
PS: Few month's ago I was running at night with my flashlight and crossed 2 runners, I think it was addressed me but one of them just said nicely "Work your core..." in a friendly tone.. as I was passing next to him.... even at night it might be visible in my gait to those who knows how to look. The strangest part is that while running that night I was constantly thinking of this problem. As a lonely runner :^) I like those strange magic moments with my fellows and whatever if his words were for me or for his running buddy I'll probably remember this event all my life :))
> 1) Do you guys have any tips? I am open to hear anything...
I've been amazed how floor living always keeps my core strong. After 4 weeks of no running and 2.5 months of nearly no running, my core is far stronger than my upper legs. Sleep on the floor (thin pad if needed), sit on the floor, get a standing desk and have a kneeling option. We got rid of all our chairs and love it.

My gym is a pile of rocks outside. 2-3 x a week I pick up a rock and do a little bit and a few pull ups. That's it.
Look into MoveNat. It answers all of your other questions as well.

I've made fantastic strength gains with Mark Lauren's program http://www.marklauren.com/ There are similar programs available but this dude used to train special forces, he knows his stuff. Personally - my core muscles weren't so bad, what I couldn't do was a decent set of pushups. After following the book for a month or two I was doing 10-15 pushups with feet elevated behind me.

He starts you with easy versions of preconditioning exercises and works up. I think his warm up routine is outstanding. I do it every day to get myself moving.

Can't help you there. I'm a DIY guy.

Jay's got some good exercises and you already have the book ... "Core Performance" has many more, good ones, too.
> 5) Is there a sport I could do in addition that would buildup my core & > upper body while meeting the requirements below? > Be outdoor, Be in motion, Cost only few bucks a bit like running...
I think I understand where you come from with your advises and I will dig toward Movnat to see if I can use it... the only thing I am afraid of is the practicality of it in order to implement this in my daily schedule... for someone like me which is for the best and worse "Professorially active" and "Not living near enough from a diverse natural environment"
I use to sleep directly on floor as a student but today I am married with an adorable person that happen to be pretty crazy about dust, germs and unconventional beds, of course NOT considering that our "conventional" is actually "Unconventional" in regard to human history.
However I really like your stones approach but I read recently on Anatomy for Runners from Jay Dicharry that the muscles activated in weight training aren't systematically the most important for running... still reading the book but it seems like in my case I have to create a core base first with focus on any elements or specific muscles that will help my form not to mention my balance issues.... then I'll certainly attack the weight and resistance part of the training.
Anyway! but ideally I like your stones and Movnat idea a lot! It is Good! but is it the best good that will actually be adapted to my personal situation? I am meditating on it :^)
All my best! Lucian

I am DIY too but I am sort of a tortured complex guy with all sort of restrictions to deal with.... I always need some custom solutions but it has to be spot on subjectively & conceptually otherwise I get frustrated and give up quickly... I am sorry for myself for being myself :^)
I didn't thought of Martial Arts...
I'll look into it Nick! Thanks!

"It's all good (but is it the Best Good?)" is my own distillation of theology from St. Augustine's "Confessions." I'm not sure what you mean by "universal value" but if you mean part of natural law knowable by anyone, sort of. Sin gets in the way of us seeing and recognizing the Best Good, let alone choosing it. So we often, unwittingly, acquiesce for a lesser good, not realizing what we are missing out on. In Catholicism, and all Christianity, the only way to remove our blinders of deaf, blind, dumb and stupid caused by sin is through Jesus Christ. So the Best Good is knowable by anyone who "runs toward Christ" (St. Benedict).

This is going very fast guys.... will review all your tips but also wanted to precise again that for now I think I am almost at "a handicap level" in terms of core muscles so as I said earlier I feel I need to start with light progressive stuff. As if I had a car accident and stayed in bed for months...that kind of sad things sorry.
And no! I am not going to ask for a handicap tag to stick on my car or running short when running.

If you have any still moments in the day you can do body weight exercises.
Anything that requires balance strengthens core. I do little bits of tai
chi for stretch breaks at work. The transition between horse stance (a high
squat) and empty stance (one foot out front but no weight on it) is a huge
challenge for my balance.
Does someone have the link for Tuck's daughter's dance exercise? That one
is real good.
Pistol squats work for folks with more leg strength than I.
Any balance exercise becomes more challenging with eyes closed.

Check this out. I really like how the program is setup, with increasing difficulty and learning new techniques. Exercises are split up to focus on balance, strength, flexibility and coordination. Also, they stress proper technique and tell you what to watch out so you won't get hurt.

I haven't had a chance to check him out yet. Personally, I like Convict Conditioning.
What I do for my core, is mostly a lot of bridges. Hits everything and helps with the posture, although, right now I need to get back to that. In the past, I've done all my sitting on a fit ball an that lead to super strong abs in only a few weeks.
Leg lefits and sit ups are a great choice. Pushups definitely help with the core stabilization.

I processed all your advises and I am now leaning toward a mixt of Movnat, Mark Lauren "Be your own gym" stuff, my Mcmillanrunning core routine DVD's and Jay Dicharry exercises.
Regarding Movnat I think it is a great idea and concept but I have only two small problems:
1) I am sensing a lack of real technical & pedagogical information's concerning the activity in terms of form, safety etc etc unless you fly to them depending on where they are and learn with them but before of course you have to play a little with your credit card, a tad too much I am tempted to write! which to me has "nothing" to do with the essentialist values of the Movnat they define during the interviews.
2) I'll be happy to do Movnat in my city but I don't see clearly enough how Movnat would really be pleasant & practical to perform in a urban environment...unless I have a Movnat center to train not far from my place near a mountain or a forest. I truly really like Movnat concept there is no doubt about that but there is some missing elements into it for its vulgarization. Otherwise in urban setup there is Parkour but I don't like the concept...its too elitist, too gymnastic and spectacular...
3) Compare with the 2 weeks certification training I'll be much happier to leave 6 months in Thailand where their are based to learn slowly and much deeply how to Movnat and this for various purposes such as primitive hunting or food gathering. And not to climb a tree...look at my buddy's then un-climb, run a little barefoot on a trail then jump in a waterfall like Tarzan... (kidding a little that's all...I am not offending Movnat... I tremendously respect the adventure and the concept.)
Conclusion I am still going to find some solutions to learn from Movnat and make it fit my lifestyle meanwhile I will use the other sources... Mark Lauren "Be your own gym", my Mcmillanrunning core routine DVD's and Jay Dicharry exercises.
I am opening the debate around Movnat anyway :^) Thanks to all! Cheers!

MoveNat is a trademarked form of running around and playing like a kid. Any
eight year old in your neighborhood should be able to show you heavy things
to move, things to climb, things to throw...

There's actually a little more to it. There are basic movement skills in jumping, throwing, running, etc., and those skills are taught in the seminars. At first it seems a bit silly that we have to be taught these things, because as kids we just know how to do many/most/all of them.
But the first time you struggle with a skill such as getting on top of a tree branch, and then you are showed the skill, and it becomes easy, you'll understand not all of it is silly.

Like Rich said, it's Friday, so I'll take a wild guess without doing any research. Clearly, you need to get your legs into the act as quickly as possible. Your arms just aren't that strong. I can do 15 pull ups pretty easily and still haven't managed to do a single muscle up. I'm close, but they're darn hard and my technique probably sucks. Attempts also bother my shoulder, so they're somewhat infrequent. Anyway, I suspect that you hook your foot over the branch and lever up into a position where your knee is above your foot. Probably you'll want the bar/branch in your near side armpit at about that point, getting your torso as close to the branch as possible. Push with your foot and roll your torso above the branch before pushing up with your arms. Keep your knee bent so that you can rock body weight over the foot. Stand up.
