Uma forma bastante fácil de perceber como funciona o LESS em situações
concretas é no Twitter Bootstrap, que oferece uma base bastante boa
para grelhas (fixas e fluídas), componentes e até Javascript.
Fazem uso de variáveis globais que são usadas ao longo dos vários
"módulos", sendo esta "framework" costumizável  a partir do seu
variables.less
