The Senate will vote on truly extreme budget proposals on Wednesday, May 16.
Please use a finger* to send an email to your Senators now. Tell them to vote against the House budget and other similarly reckless plans.
And let your Representative know what you think of his or her vote last week - see below.
We've written about the House-passed budget before. The short version: over a decade, it would cut $5.3 trillion from almost every domestic program, including Medicaid, SNAP/food stamps, the Affordable Care Act, education, environment, child care, housing, and more. About two-thirds of the cuts hit low-income people hard. It would permanently strangle the ability of Medicaid and SNAP to respond to economic slumps by turning these programs into block grants with restricted funding. It proposes substantial cuts to Medicare that would kick in after the first ten years. At the same time, it would continue all the Bush tax cuts AND FURTHER SLASH taxes at the top - all told, tax cuts of nearly $10 TRILLION over ten years. And the budget INCREASES military spending by $200 billion.
These are upside-down priorities. Take a minute and tell your Senators you want them to vote NO. We need a budget that increases revenues fairly and makes responsible military cuts so we can protect low-income people and get our economy moving again. To write to your Senators, click here.
And last week, the House voted.While your finger is warmed up, show your Representative you were paying attention to the House's vote last week to pass the misguided Sequester Replacement Act of 2012 (H.R. 5652). We know how your Rep. voted and have drafted emails thanking those who voted no and expressing disappointment to those who voted in favor. Click here to hold your Representative accountable.
In sum, how hard are we asking your finger to work?
Even if you click on all the background information, we think you can hold your Representative and Senators accountable in under 10 clicks. If you're patient enough to read our emails, you know why it's important to do so. The House and Senate won't agree now. But at the end of the year we will be facing (1) automatic cuts to domestic and military programs, and (2) the expiration of ALL the Bush tax cuts. Negotiations will be in earnest. The people who want to protect or increase military spending and tax breaks at the top are making their views known, day after day. We cannot be silent.
Thank you for speaking out! Most people don't think you will do both the Senate and House letters - it would be nice to prove them wrong.
