I have decided to move from a single 1 TB 3.5" drive to a two 2.5" RAID configuration using Seagate Momentus XT drives, which are hybrid drives with 4 GB of RAM.
I already have the two-drive bracket kit.
"Solid state hybrid drive with 4GB solid state memory delivers SSD-like performance with hard drive capacity options.
Adaptive Memory technology customizes performance by aligning to user needs for overall improved system response.
80 percent faster performance than traditional 7200-RPM drives in PCMark Vantage benchmark scores
Low heat and vibration - quiet operation without giving up storage capacity and affordability
OS- and application-independent - designed for any SATA standard laptop PC"
The RocketRAID 2 x eSATA III card, which is fully supported by Lion, works well with the Supermicro and an "import" PCI-e cable kit (the Supermicro "riser" appears to be a no-go).
The external four-drive cases with integral port multipliers (Rosewill brand, but these are SATA I and competitive units are available which are SATA II ... so far, there are no SATA III port multipliers) can be used to "serve" video content to my in-house network.
Anyway, that's the plan.

They were $79.99 each with free three day shipping. An "egg-beater"
special last Friday (yesterday). I expect to receive them on Monday or
Tuesday as UPS doesn't count the weekend.
These will be RAIDed for the OS, not for the video content.
