Currently downloading this update on my DS3L and I'm not using an update partition. Hopefully things go okay.  Anyone else try this update yet?

Well, I certainly don't recommend doing that on an update which no one really knows what effect it will have, but I have a 10.7.4 partition on the drive which could be booted to make any changes that need to be made. Plus that is basically a bare system, mainly just used for testing system updates, etc.

I am presently applying the same technique on my DC7800 and will hopefully have the same result.

Success on the DC7800 also. This update appears to be fairly safe, at least for a DS3L or DC7800!

Do you think upgrading directly from the mac app store (former software upgrade) may give issues?

10.8.2 Combo Update successful on the Q45/ICH10-D0 DC7900 (originally a
DC7800).

Interesting factoid: my local branch of Chase Bank uses DC7800/DC7900 SFFs
at each "officer's" (Assistant Vice President, Branch manager, etcetera)
work station. I think the "tellers" get some kind of IBM "point of sale"
terminal.

They probably didn't get their SFFs from Geeks for $65, however.

Word to the wise: should you desire to run Ubuntu from a Hack, BE SURE to
disconnect your hard drives.

My DC7800 SFF Lion HD was "bricked" as a consequence of simply booting the
9.04 Ubuntu and operating it in non-installation mode.

No, but the machine you bought more than likely came from a similar institution. Most of these systems are off-lease models sold to wholesalers like Geeks.

I've been running 'live' versions of Linux since they first started using them and have never had such a problem. The only time I've ever experienced any similar problem was when I accidentally chose install from the initial menu instead of run in live mode. But even that usually warns the user prior to making any changes to the hard drive.

Has anyone made a guide yet for the 1201N? Last time i checked insanelymac the info was spread out over three or so pages with revisions all the way through. Not that i am in any super rush for ML, but it would be nice to feel modern and up to date.

Happy to report that the update went fine. Just had to use the AppleHDA rollback in MultiBeast to get my sound back. BTW, I used the app store for this update instead of downloading the combo update. I do like the fact that you do not have to log into your account to use this aspect of the app store.

Speaking of this, I'm curious if anyone has used the ML version of MultiBeast to configure sound on their ALC888 based system? I no longer see any reference to rolling back AppleHDA and was just wondering how sound was configured on this later version.

It didn't work for me. Many KP's later, I'm finally able to boot into the system, but without USB for keyboard or mouse. It works fine in safe mode so I'm guessing I have a conflict of some sort. I've worked through this before and will figure it out.

Sorry Doug...should have mentioned. This was on the DC 7800...I'm back on 10.8.1 right now, and purchased a Radeon 5450 locally for $20 to replace the Gigabyte NVIDIA 8400GS. I've had more problems with my particular 8400 than I liked, so I'm trying this Radeon with information provided here: Radeon 5450

I have it installed on this partition, and everything is working great with it. It booted without suggesting any problems, so I'm going to back some things up, and then try to run the update again.

That's funny, mine also has an 8400GS, but it is a newer one with DDR3 memory. It's funny how the older Nvidia cards, which used to be among the most compatible, are now giving problems in ML left and right. Do let us know how it goes with the Radeon as I am considering moving to those as well.

It's actually worse with the Radeon HD5450. I'm getting no acceleration at all. I put the 8400 GS back in, and my graphics is restored. Unfortunately, 10.8.2 is still not working for me. I've gone from an issue with NVEEnabler64.kext, which I removed, and then reinstalled, and now it's an audio issue and a kext it can't find. I can't find it either, so I've put the DC 7800 to rest for awhile, at least as far as 10.8.2 is concerned. 10.8.1 is running fine on two other partitions and I think I'll leave it at that for awhile. Audio, without voodoo, will still not work. It can't see any devices other than my airport express connections to connect to. Both of my sound dongles light up fine, but I don't need a flashlight so much.

After a day or two, I may feel like another round.

Get the latest MultiBeast.

For ML, get the accelerator package which adds the newest devices.

I am now having ZERO problems with 8400GS and SL, L and ML.

I've "finally" completed the last update on one partition at least. It seems like my problem has been my particular 8400gs. I removed it, at least for now, put the HIS Radeon HD5450 in, and I had no problem with the updates. At least I have decent resolution, if not acceleration and I'm not getting the KP's I was with the 8400GS! I'll work with the 5450...it gave me the resolution OOB...but videos are horrendous without acceleration of course.

At least on 10.8.x AND provided the two nVidia extensions ...

_OverrideNVDANV50Hal

... and ...

_OverrideNVDAResman

... have been installed, I can install ANY nVidia card in my DC7900 with
perfect results.

This includes 8400GS without DDR3, 8400GS with DDR3, 8400GS without HDMI
and 8400GS with HDMI, or any combination.

It's not like the old days, you can't just use an 8400GS and have guaranteed good results. Some systems work and some don't. But for me, the majority of the ones I have tried have either required a trick to get them working or don't work at all. Using the override is NOT a solution I am really interested as I used it on my DS3L and it seems to me that the video is very slow on that system.

I know Nvidia is the source of the problem as proven by the recent install on my GA-945-GCMX-S2, and given the fact that I cannot get the install to work with my MSI system, obviously a new solution is required, at least for me.

Ok...I finally identified my problem with this update, and in every case, it's been the graphics card. My 8400GS, is one you may want to avoid:

Gigabyte 8400GS 512MB GDDR2 w/HDMI

I didn't have much luck with this one either. I was never able to get graphics acceleration with it:

HIS Radeon HD5450 512MB DDR3 Full HD w/HDMI

However, this one is golden!

PNY GeForce GT430, 2048MB, DDR3 w/HDMI

It worked beautifully OOB and only required a download from NVIDA (CUDA drivers) to give me the acceleration. I picked it up from NewEgg for $69 and it has a $10 rebate. While it's certainly not high end, the beauty of this card is that it just works with a hack so well.

I had researched cards I purchased previously, and truthfully didn't have much money in them at all anyway, but the vendor is something I didn't pay enough attention to. I will going forward! I used this link to help a little:

osx86 Project

After doing a fresh install on one partition, then copying that installation to another partiion, I then updated to 10.8.2 and then did the supplemental update. To see where I was, I just clicked restart and without a problem, it booted. My sound was affected with the previous graphics cards as well, wanting to default to HDMI and not giving me any other options beyond Voodoo. With the little USB dongle that was suggested by Mosslack, my sound works just fine.

Bottom line, I highly recommend the PNY GT 430, and I saw a few on eBay before purchasing from Newegg (I had a gift card!) and suggest you pay close attention to the vendor if you decide on an 8400GS or Radeon HD5450. Both are known to work well with a hack, and neither of mine worked well at all for me.

after updating several hack to ML, i encountered my first one with graphics issues.  it's a zotac ITX geforce9300.  under lion, it worked fine with a GT520 pci-e card.

i updated the zotac to ML, and at the end of the boot sequence, the screen went black instead of shifting to the desktop.  the HD activity light continued to flash, so i knew it had booted properly.

long story short, i needed to add the GT520's vendor and device ID to both the nvda100 kexts (i'm not sure why there are two, nor do i know which one should contain the info for the 520).  that solved the problem.

then i switched to an MSI N210, and again, i had to add that card's ID info to the nvda100 kexts.

just for fun, i tried the onboard graphics (9300), and of course i again had to add that device's info into the nvda50 kext.

as for the hack that i have with an 8400S which, under lion, i needed to add the ID info to nvda50 kext in order to get anything other than default resolution:  when i updated that box to ML, graphics worked fine.  apparently the ML version of nvda50 contains the appropriate ID"s for that card out of the box.

I think the vendor is the main problem with mine Doug, but I tried a couple of things:

1. Computers And You blog:

2. This looked the most promising, but neither of the first two methods did anything for me, and I never tried the third:
OSx86.net ATI Radeon 5450 with Full QE/CI...

I had full resolution, but QE/CI never happened for mine. Many people have had success with this board, and maybe I didn't spend enough time on it. If you want to play with it, I'll be happy to send it to you.

Interesting...something I'll have to watch for. I had added the device ID's for both of mine, but to no avail unfortunately. I didn't do a thing for the GT430 as I said, but I did download the Cuda drivers for Mac from NvDIA. The card was recognized right away and once the drivers were applied, I had acceleration as well. I'm pleased with it, but I also know how temporary that can be!

My feeling on this is that Apple must be elimiinating some of the older cards info from the kexts. I would imagine these problems plague actual Mac systems as well, so who knows why they do what they do.

The recent issues with the P35 systems perhaps portend bad news for the
future.

I suspect Apple is now focusing on LGA 1155 systems and that new one which
has six cores on a carrier with more than 2000 pins.

Sooner, rather than later, we are ALL going to be very much on our own.

Well, the first one I tried it on didn't work at all. By that I mean I got no video at all from the VGA connector, not even the BIOS or bootup screens. The only reason I can think of is b/c the card I bought is a PCI Express 2.1 card while the old GA-945GCMX-S2 motherboard only has a PCI Express x16 slot, not even 2.0. I do plan to try it in my MSI system when I can get around to it and will report back on that when it happens.
