OT: VPN server

I'm looking into setting up my DS3L as a VPN server, at least temporarily so I can share some files with my son who lives 600 miles away. I know this capability has been within OS X since at least SL, but unless you use the server version, setup requires jumping through some hoops. So I saw this:

There was also a link for a video which shows how to set up the VPN in under 2 minutes. Of course the video was over 5 minutes long! Not sure what that was about, but the description says you can setup a VPN server in Demo mode for free. Also not sure what good that would do. I gather if you want to actually use the program it will cost $9.

Anyone know of a free alternative?
