Every now and then, my system just shuts down. Doesn't happen very often, but I want to understand what causes this and how to fix it. In an effort to help in this process, I have listed the relevant portions of the system and kernel logs below.

Obviously the system went down sometime around 05:34 and it was related to Java. I do have a Java applet I leave running all of the time to monitor my stocks and it sometimes crashes when Scottrade either updates it or for some other reason, but I didn't think this would be enough to bring down the system. Any thoughts?

Another piece of the puzzle, noticed a recovered files folder in my trash that was not there last night. A folder called MozUpdater, which is to download and install the daily release candidate for Firefox. I would suspect this more than I would the Scottrade app, but who knows. Maybe there was a conflict between the two?

Wouldn't MozUpdater have something to do with Mozilla (Firefox)?

CGContextGetCTM is a run time error generated by the Java compiler. It first surfaced in 10.7.4. It is an bug in the OSX Java from that era. This should not take the system down, however it is a hang and it would be necessary to kill the process. Of course the difference between a run away process and a hung system is just technical. Regaining control is often easiest by a forced reboot.

The Java application generating this must have been compiled for OS X prior to 10.7.4. I think the only solution would be to find an update for the application or to remove it from your system.
