Preferably one thats been tested by other users, has some reliable kexts for it etc
and is very cheap :D

Both Peter and I have used an Nvidia 8400 GS with success. Those are usually available pretty cheap from NewEgg or Fry's. Although I've never tried it, the GeForce 210 should work as well. HTH

I use 7200GSes for pre-Lion systems because these can operate with the
required arch=i386 boot parameter. The applications may still run 64-bits,
however.

I use 8400GS for Lion and Mountain Lion as these assume a 64-bit kernel,
even if the application runs 32-bits.

I have purchased a number of 8400GSes, from nVIDIA, eVGA, Galaxy and
others, and in non-HDMI as well as HDMI versions, and also high- and
low-profile. Also DDR3 as well as DDR2.

Mountain Lion may need the "NV Override for Mountain Lion" package.

All have worked.

The 210 works, too; also the 9500GT, but I have not tested these on
Mountain Lion.

i've had good luck with the 210 from msi.

if you live within range of a fry's retail store, they have them this week for $9 after rebate.  i checked their website--it usually has the same offers, but for some reason, when i pull up the rebate form from the listing for the product, it specifies "frys retail store only".

Congrats! I hope it works well for you. I had NO luck with a Gigabyte 8400GS fyi. The vendor is important for compatibility apparently. I also had problems with an HIS Radeon HD 5450. Again, the vendor is important, as others are working fine with this board. I've had excellent results with my current board, a PNY GeForce GT430. It's running on my DC7800 OOB with acceleration. On one partition, I've downloaded Cuda drivers from Nvidia for the Mac, and installed, but on another partition, it's just the card and it's working as well as with the Cuda drivers. I do have it connected to the VGA port however, and haven't tried HDMI on it as I don't currently have a need for it. I need to try DVI yet, but I don't have anything to try it with.

Good-luck!

Nvida Geforce 210 btw), has anyone had any luck with getting the
Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 working????
My one is sitting in a Intel Q35 Chipset if that helps :)

Thanks in advance :)

The problem is Apple NEVER released GMA3100 support at all, only GMAX3100,
as for some laptops, and even then it was 32-bit, so no good for anything
past Snow Leopard.

My Toshiba Satellite has GMAX3100. Then, someone came up with GMAX3100
64-bit kexts, and Lion will boot on the laptop.

Laptops are always tricky. I used iATKOS L as it has the proper keyboard
and trackpad kexts.

It successfully boots Lion MOST of the time.

If the "handoff" from the boot loader to the Desktop is not successful,
simply reboot until it is.

10.7.3 breaks something in the USB system, so I stick with 10.7.2.

Ah ok then, thats a shame :(
Thank you very much replying though :)
I guess my only bet now is to head down to
the computer swap meet tomorrow and hopefully
pick up a compatible graphics card :)

Nice!
I just ended up getting myself a Gt 210 from my local Computer Shop for $24.
Works perfectly, no problems so far :), although haven't tried dvi or hdmi yet :S

Time to retire the GeForce 7200GS.
I'm running Lion 10.7.4 (32bit) Vanilla (intelcpupowermanagement) on the Shuttle SG31G2, and would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Looking at this 210 card:   http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130586

I have upgraded the power supply to 300w which is the minimum called for. Do Shuttle users have experience with this card, or know of a better cheap card. Thanks.

I bought the 512 Mb version of this card with hopes it would cure my ML video card woes. It has not done that yet, but I think if I add the vendor info to the correct plist it will work. I hope.

Yes, the 7200GS is useless on Mountain Lion.

The maximum I run a 7200GS is Snow Leopard, now ... too many issues with
Lion.

My Shuttles have either a 7200GS, if limited to Snow Leopard, or an
8400GS, if later than Snow Leopard.

My SP35 Shuttles have a HUGE power supply, the others do not.

I also have a SH61 and an SH67. Both of those have USB 3.0 on mobo, and
also a mini-PCI-e slot (filled) with a 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi card.

A good thing about Shuttles is the BIOS turns off the on-mobo video, if
present, and a PCI-e 16x video card is inserted, thereby saving a little
power.

I have two Gigabytes or ASRocks which are running 210 or 9500 cards, with
success on Lion or later.

Still, I think an 8400GS is the best choice for a Hack, and I have quite a
number of those, from several vendors. Various VRAM sizes, standard and
low profile, etc, etc, etc.

That is a VERY GOOD card.

I have one, which is 512 MB, and which was purchased before the support
for 210s was added to the nVidia kexts.

Personally, I strongly favor cards which are NO THICKER than one card
slot, have an on-board fan (hence they don't require a HUGE heat sink),
and which have SVGA, DVI AND HDMI, and better yet, are standard AND low
profile, and include the low profile brackets.

hackintosh1x,
thanks for your reply.
Is there a 64 bit version of the Eva 210 512MB? Maybe you're using the MSI 210 which does have a 64bit version? Unless I'm wrong (which is entirely possible) a 64bit video card is needed to run Mountain lion.

This 32-bit/64-bit business is in the graphics processor chip set, not the
VRAM.

7,000 series and earlier GENERALLY support only 32-bit, but there are
apparently some which support 64-bit.

8,000 series and later GENERALLY support 32-bit AND 64-bit.

IF your 7200GS says it is really a 7300, then it is possible that it
actually supports 64-bit.

As an aside, I have found that there exists a 64-bit version of the
GMAX3100 support.

I am running that on a Toshiba Satellite.

Not without SOME difficulties, of course.

If not the first time, then I have to boot it perhaps three times to get
the boot loader to Desktop hand-off right and supporting 64-bit.

But, it IS, most of the time, supporting Lion with 64-bit.

It is an iAKTOS L installation. I believe 10.7.3 or greater breaks USB
support, however. Possibly also trackpad and keyboard.

Nothing comes easily on a HackPro, and it comes MUCH less easily on a
HackTop.

Wow, I didn't even notice that card was 32 bit. Let me know how the 64 bit card works and I will try that.

I have confirmed this card does work under ML. I cloned the fully updated 10.8.2 partition on my DS3L to another drive, stuck that drive into the GA-945GCMX-S2 and it booted just fine. I plan to do a complete reinstall of ML on this system and fully update it before plugging the GeForce 210 back in. Hopefully that will allow it to work as it should. The only other thing I remember I had to do on the DS3L was to use the NV override as it has an 8400 GS in it.

I knew this GA-945GCMX-S2 should be capable of running ML with the proper video card and it looks like that is the case.

This is also a very good card.  Works perfectly with my ML setup, has a large heat sink (so it's quiet, and I don't have to worry about the fan going out), has VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports, and both the high and low-profile brackets:

MSI N210-MD512D3H/LP GeForce 210 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card
