I rode one of my perms yesterday - Fulshear-Brookshire-Bellville-
Industry-Fayettville-Frelberg-Bernardo-Sealy-San Felipe-Frydek-Wallis-
Simonton-Fulshear - in perhaps the best weather we've had for this
sort of activity all year.
40's to start, 70's by the end of the ride, sunny, dry, although a
pesky head wind most of the way - when I did get a tail wind I was
standing on the pedals being propelled along at 20+ MPH with no
pedalling, unfortunately that occurred very rarely.
One of the better sections of this route for hills is FM 159 between
Bellville and Fayettville, but a once smooth road surface has been
replaced with the ubiquitous Texas chip seal, so like most of the
roads we ride over, what used to be a pleasant ride is now a jolting
misery.
No (live) deer to be seen on this ride, but two beautiful does were
dead on the side of the road; bubba wins again!
Coming into San Felipe I came across a trail ride, I thought I had
really got the date/time thing wrong but it seems they were out doing
a practice run for the Trail Ride into Houston for the Stock Show next
year. There were at least a couple of hundred horses with some very
pretty girls wearing white camisole tops and huge dray horses pulling
the wagons. I cycled along side them and grabbed a lift on the side of
one of the wagons so I could ask them what they were up to. It seems
this was the Sawgrass trail ride having "a good old day's ride' and
they were going to have a Hoe Down (spelling?) that night. All very
colorful and bucolic.
I later came across another ride entering 1093 in Simonton, they said
they were the Johny Lodge Trail ride. It must have been the designated
day for all trail rides to fire up the horses.
On this beautiful day for cycling, I only saw one other cyclist, and
that was near Fayettville, although there were signs for rest-stop
signs indicating that Conoco-Phillips were out doing a ride somewhere
north of Fayettville.
For anyone riding the 600K next week, I'm happy to report that the two
dogs along Kulow Road are in fine fettle. I told them not to bother me
because there were more riders coming along next week who might have
more meat on their bones - well you have to survive, don't you?
Ciao.
Ken.
