alternatives to the regular brevet series, so the invitation to ride
tomorrows perm is rescinded, sorry about that.
Just a reminder, any RUSA member may ride any of my perms by giving me
a least five days notice. Other perm holders may have different notice
requirements.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas, and didn't eat too much - I did,
and will probably spend much of 2010 working the extra weight off.
If it isn't too cold, or too windy, or raining or anything, I may see
many of you on the New Year's Day Plus One 200K brevet ride.

A number of statements on the RUSA website say that perms are not a substitute for a brevet series, so no one is confused about qualifications for other rides, but where did you hear that you could not invite other riders?
In the Rules for Permanent Riders and the Rules for Permanent Route Owners the ride time and date may be publicized by either the owner or the rider. In the FAQ it says that perms can be ridden in groups, as well. Must we join up by chance at the start time and place?

...Once the route owner has accepted the rider's notice of entry, the rider may publicize the date and time of the intended ride, unless the route owner requests that the rider refrain from doing so...

1.Does a Permanent have to be a solo ride?
No, you may ride a Permanent in a group with others. The rule regarding drafting requires that everyone in the group be entered in the ride. Also, if you have a support crew, the rules allow them to meet you only at the control points.

There is the nub. Another RUSA member must officially request from the
route owner permission to do the ride, once that request is made in a
timely manner, and the route owner approves the request and sends the
perm card, etc. to the rider, the route owner can then publicise the
ride, not before.

within the rules, but so long as you're riding the route, yourself,
it's fine for you to ask for company in the way you did.
This was clarified as part of an email to Permanent route owners last
April. In pertinent part:
"If you elect to ride one of your own routes, you may publicize the
ride in the same manner as if you accepted a notice of entry from
another club member. However, RUSA asks that you don't abuse the
privilege by scheduling rides in violation of the principle, again,
that you should not run Permanents as de facto brevets."
Just wanted to take a moment to clarify in light of the thread.
