Yesterday, I bought a 20-ounce bottle of Vanilla Coke (Coca-Cola's newest soft drink) @ Food Town (Louetta @ Stuebner-Airline, across from H-E-B Pantry Foods & catty-corner from Klein High School). Anyway, after allowing it to get good & cold in the refrigerator overnight, I finally gave it a try this afternoon: it tastes almost like a Coke Float, but obviously without the messy Vanilla Ice Cream (although I must admit that I can hardly taste the Vanilla flavoring in Vanilla Coke at times, for reasons unknown).
All in all, a pretty good soft drink; it's something that I'll definitely try again. Right now, however, I'm waiting for Pepsi to come out with its' newest soft drink, Pepsi Blue (a blue-colored, berry flavored doft drink) later this summer.

I'm a die-hard Diet Coke guzzler. I tried the new Lemon Diet Coke and it was awful, but the equivalent product Diet Pepsi Twist is pretty good. -- Fascism: Concentrated private control of wealth, control of information, massive investment/manufacture of arms and military equipment, suppression of labor movements...sound familiar?

I tried a Vanilla Coke Thursday, bought out of a machine in a 20-oz. bottle, reasonably cold. I'm a surprised by you saying you could hardly taste the vanilla - I could hardly taste the Coke. I thought it tasted like an old vanilla cream soda (though I haven't had one of those in years). I drank it straight from the bottle, and thought it might be better over ice and slightly diluted - the vanilla was just too strong for my taste.

I hadn't heard of Pepsi Blue - I'm waiting for the new Dr. Pepper drink.
I tried one the other day. I would prefer a straight Coke with a scoop of Vanilla, but a Vanilla Coke isn't a bad substitute if you ask me! Not bad at all.

I don't know what's up with these "flavored" soft drinks, but there's nothing worse on God's Green Earth than "Pepsi Twist". -- Kelly Younger

That new Lemon Coke is awful !!!!!!!!!!!!! It tastes like Coke with Lemon Pledge furniture polish..seriously, it even has a greasy,wax-polish type taste. Yuck.

There was an article about these new flavored soft drinks (Vaniila Coke, Pepsi Blue, & Dr. Pepper's Red Fusion)in the Chronicle's Business section here recently (about a week or two ago, I believe).

I thought it was okay, but I agree, after you taste more of it the vanilla flavoring is hardly there anymore. I really like my vanilla cherry cokes from Sonic :)

I used to get the same at Simpsons (*sniffle*) and then at 59 diner. But I had to cut back on the syrup, I'd always end up with a tummyache. So lately I've just been getting vanilla cokes.
And I just tried the new Vanilla Coke today and so far I like it. It doesn't seem to have as overpowering a taste as Cherry Coke, but that may be due more to vanilla just being a more mild flavor than cherry to begin with.

My husband bought a vanilla Coke this weekend. It had too much sugar and vanilla for my taste. I've actually gotten hooked on Mountain Deu RED. It's cherry soda with lots of caffeine. I normally don't like oversweet sodas and this seems less sweet to me.

I, my wife, and a co-worker (not a cow orker) think Lemon Diet Coke is great! No accounting for taste, I guess.

I was at Randall's on Westheimer & Wilcrest a week or so ago, and the front-end supervisor was on the intercom - "Come one, come all - try the New Vanilla Coke!" I just burst out laughing - "new"? Please.
I got my stuff, went to the front and put everything on the little "express" checkout conveyer belt. The guy comes by and asks if I want to try a New Vanilla Coke and ask him what's the difference between the Vanilla (or chocolate, or Strawberry, etc) cokes I've been drinking for 30 years?
Curious because I figured this guy is making some sort of comission off the sales of the 20 oz bottles, I bought one. Wasn't "nasty", but wasn't "pleasant" or "refreshing" either. Drank part of it, and just chucked the rest. I'd rather have Mr. Pibb, or Dr. Pepper - don't drink alot of Coca Cola anyways.

In the 1950's, growing up in Shoreacres, the closest soda fountain was at the corner drugstore in LaPorte. We called it a "shipwreck" when it had all flavors of syrup in it.

Strange!!! I just got this e-mailed press release from the PR guy for Avalon Diner. They aren't clients of mine... he's not a client of mine... but it relates perfectly to the thread:
"Teaching kids to be perfect jerks Avalon Diners renewing/expanding soda jerk classes
For any child 5-15 whose current life aspiration is to make the perfect old fashion ice cream soda, root beer float or creamy milkshake, all three Avalon Diner locations are now ready to make some soda fountain dreams come true. Long popular during summer and fall at Avalon 2 on the Southwest Freeway, the soda jerk classes are not only kicking off beginning June 3, they are now being offered at the original Avalon on Westheimer and at Avalon 3 in The Fountains in Stafford. Arranged by reservation, aa certified soda jerk will lead classes behind the fountain on making some of the diner's favorite soda treats. Classes run from 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and include a full meal from the children's menu. The cost - including class, the meal, drink and dessert - is just $10 per student. Classes are limited to 10 people. Just call ahead and make reservations. The art of being a soda jerk is truly an American one which not only includes making ideal ice cream concoctions but speaking the language as well. Students will get into this hands on learning experience by wearing the soda jerk hat and learning a few of the terms only another soda jerk would understand. Best of all, each student gets to have his or her just desserts at the end of the session. The original Avalon Drug, which contained soda fountain and diner, opened in 1938 at Kirby and Westheimer and quickly became a popular breakfast and lunch spot for residents of River Oaks. In 1992 the diner portion was purchased by Bambi Lynn and Coy Ramsey who own three diners today. Avalon 2 opened late in 1998, 60 years after the original diner opened. Avalon Diner 3 opened a year later in The Fountains in Stafford. The Diners still maintains active accounts (people sign for their meals and pay monthly) that go back nearly 50 years. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is necessary, but students, all aged 5-15, are accepted on a first-come, first-enrolled basis. Groups are welcome. For more information, call 713-838-2500."
I called 'em suicides on sno-cones (all flavors) when I was young. Last time at the local refresqueria, I heard a boy order a "Batman". That was a sno-cone with all flavors. Kerr.

I would not mind doing that myself, I wonder if they accept people who behave 15, but have a few more miles. Alternatively, anyone want to lend me a teenager? JJ

Randall's in MeyerPark Plaza has Vanilla Cokes' in the twenty oz. for .50 cents.. I liked it...but again, I also didn't taste much of the Vanilla...(maybe that's a good thing). Thanks for the tip on the Vanilla Cherry cokes from Sonic....

In my experience, so far, there seems to be a wide variation in the strength of the vanilla -- my first one, from Auchan on the Tollway, was almost indistinguishable from plain old Coke, but others since then have ranged from just as weak to (from the Stop N Rob at Bellaire and Fondren) paint-remover. The best one yet's been from the Kroger on Memorial, near Stratford HS. Something tells me Coke didn't quite get the quality controls straight before launching, but I hope they get the bugs worked out -- the medium-strength ones are definitely worth it.
--PLH, and they're a lot neater than having all that ice cream
