Does anyone have any favorite places for lunch between here and San Antonio?
We're driving over on Saturday and could use some suggestions. Cozy country
places? Great authentic BBB?

Okay -- my spell check changed BBQ to BBB before I knew it.

Assuming you're going out I-10 you might stop at Mikeska's in Columbus.
I stopped there on the way to Austin recently and enjoyed it. Search for
"Jerky Source" to find the thread.

I'm pretty sure I-10 goes to San Antonio.

I've been wanting to stop and try that for a couple years. Alas, never been
at a stopping point when going through there. I have stopped at Grumpy's in
Flatonia before - your basic Texas cafe, clean, reasonable. There's also a
place in Sequin that's advertised along the way on a number of billboards
I'd like to try some time, but alas, name escapes me right now.

Grumpy's is great. Good sausage and pies. It's also exactly at the point
where the bluebonnets are the best on the way to San Antonio.

My favorite place is an old feed store converted into Clear Springs
Restaurant. Old membrobila hanging everywhere and great fried catfish,
shrimp and unbelivable onion rings. They have other items i.e. steak,
burgers, etc. But I go for the fried shrimp. Moderate prices and they
serve alcohol. Every time I go to San Antonio from Austin I stop in. Just
take Hwy 46 and for you coming from I-10 I'm guessing it's about 6-7 miles
ahead and on your left.

The town of Schulenberg, just south of I-10 at the intersection of
federal highways 77 and 90, has a butchers's shop that is definitely
worth a visit. Sorry that I can remember the name, but the town is
small and I believe it's on 77. It's midway between San Antonio and
Houston, so it makes a good stop. Take the 77 exit and go south
a mile or two.

Donna --

If you're looking for a place to stop & eat along I-10 betw. Houston & San
Antonio, I highly reccommend
Jerry Mikeska's Bar-B-Q in Columbus (Exit 698). Pretty good Bar-B-Q plates &
sandwiches; but whatever you do,
you've simply got to try their 'World Famous' Banana Pudding, as it is truly
out of this world!! That's the man reason
why I love to stop there in the first place!! (In fact, I get hungry just by
even thinking about Mikeska's Banana Pudding!!)

OBTW, if you're looking for a place to take a quick a bathroom break and/or
stretch your legs awhile, I highly reccommend
the recently renovated Rest Area at Exit 692 (just west of Columbus); very
clean, modern, & comfortable; I also reccommend
the Exit 621 Rest Area (betw. Luling & Seguin); I always love to stop here
whenever I'm en route to New Braunfels
(my "home-away-from-home" when I'm not in Houston); maybe that's because I love
the area so much.

Now, as for the person who thinking about a place in Seguin but just can't seem
to remember the name, unless I'm mistaken,
the name of the place might be K & G Steak House (which is just north of I-10
on Hwy. 123 Bypass --Exit 610--, right
close to Holiday Inn). (Either that, or it's probably the Adobe Cafe --a
Mexican restaurant-- that they're thinking about.
I tried the Adobe Cafe in New Braunfels once, and it was terrible; I certainly
wouldn't reccommend the Adobe Cafe to anyone.)
At any rate, the only thing that I really do know for sure about I-10 in Seguin
is Exit #607 (Texas 46 - New Braunfels),
because AFAIC, it's the Gateway to New Braunfels (my "home-aay-from-home) & the
Texas Hill Country.

One other thing that you really do need to know about I-10 thru Seguin is that
you need to watch your speed & keep an eye
out for the Texas DPS officers, as they have a base there in Seguin, & are
notorious for issuing speeding tickets hand over fist;
so remember, you've been warned!!

At any rate, I hope this info. helps!!

Regards,
Keith

I tried the banana pudding at Mikeska's last time I was there, on your
recommendation in fact, and I didn't find anything *that* special about it. I mean
it was good, but to me it just tasted like plain ol' Jello pudding; no chunks of
banana or anything like that. What is it about theirs that makes you love it so?

Now, in my opinion, the best banana pudding I've ever had was at Backyard BBQ on
Fondren. It was obviously homemade, lots of banana slices and vanilla wafer
cookies, and it had some sort of whipped cream topping. Truly delicious.

Whenever I see Oma's Place (on Hwy. 46, just 1 block east of I-35 -- across from Super 8 Motel) in New Braunfels,
I get all excited because it's among the first few landmarks that I see coming into town on Hwy. 46 from Seguin & Houston
(that, & Clear Springs Inn, plus all sorts of billboards for New Braunfels area businesses); moreover, I really get excited
(& feel very relaxed, as well) the moment that the I-35 overpass comes into view.

(I frequently visit New Braunfels, BTW -- especially for a few days every summer when I make my annual visit to Schlitterbahn!!)

Anyway, even though I've never actually been to Oma's Haus, I've heard they have some very unusual & uniques dishes,
such as "German Nachos", "German Egg Rolls", & "The Whole Thing Dinner" (a little bit of everything), as well as traditional
German schnitzels, sausage, & sauerkraut.  Also, be sure to check out their gift shop, which includes homemade food & bakery items
(as well as unique Texas items).

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that Oma's Haus has a website, but I can't remember the address at the moment.  (Oh, well!)

It's most of the way to SA, but Luling City Market has wonderful BBQ;
I particularly like their pork ribs.

Schulenburg's also the home of two long-time I-10 eating establishments
(Frank's Restaurant & Oakridge Smokehouse);
they're directly across from each other on I-10. Frank's is known for
its' Jumbo Hamburgers (as well as the fact that
they have a pretty good plate lunch), while Oakridge Smokehouse is
primarily a BBQ joint (along with a convenience store,
gas station, & motel (complete with its' own swimming pool).) OBTW, I
should point out that Frank's is on the south side
of I-10, while Oakridge Smokehouse is on the north side. At any rate,
both places can obviously be found on I-10 at Exit 674
(US 77 -- Schulenburg/Halllettsville/La Grange).

What occurs to me is that since the speed limit was upped and you can drive
to San Antonio in under three hours, I haven't stopped along the way in
years. You can leave Houston by 9:00 am and have lunch on the River Walk by
noon. Too bad, I guess.

I think it was within the last year that Seguin had a problem with an
arsonist. I remember hearing something about a popular BBQ
establishment being burned out. I hope it wasn't Luling City Market.
I haven't been through there since to check it out.

Oh no, you are not the only one. The last few times I have been there, it's been
very unimpressive. My husband disagrees with me on this. Every time I have
ordered the brisket, it has been tough, and it has never really had a good smokey
flavor, but he has always liked it. The ribs are okay, but kind of small and
sometimes tough. The sausage isn't anything special. And as I mentioned in
another post, the banana pudding tastes like it could be Jello for all I know.
Still, my in-laws love stopping there on the way to Johnson City. I suppose it's
better than when they stop at Burger King! Talk about indigestion for the rest of
the ride... ugh!

It's like their constant frequenting of Steak and Ale, which I will probably never
understand. That place usually gets at least one person's meal wrong, overcooks
or undercooks the meat, and the service has always been lacking in quality as
well. Last time there, I saw a waiter going from room to room, table to table,
trying to figure out whose dinner he was carrying around! And to top it off, the
prices have gone waaaay up! My in-laws are just too nice to say anything. I
certainly would not shell out that kind of money to eat there. There is much
better to be had 'round Houston.

I can't remember the name of the place, but there's a great country place in
Shiner - Shiner's not that big, so you'd probably be able to find it - "chicken
fried steak" as big as a plate!

That's nothing compared to what my father & I once pulled off  many years when we went to visit relatives out in West Texas..
One morning in October 1990, my father & I left our place at Bissonnet & Beltway 8 (where we were living at the time) at 5 a.m.,
& arrived in San Antonio around 7 a.m.; just before 8 a.m., we were on the west side of SA, going west on I-10  -- and this was
during Morning Rush Hour, no less!!

Another thing to take into consideration is that once we went through at Bissonnet & Beltway 8 (once we left our apartment complex),
we didn't see our next red light uintil we got to Kerrville (where we stopped to get gas & ate breakfast) -- some 250 mi. or about
3 1/2 hrs. later!!

FTR, we finally reached our destination (which was the Classic Inn Motel in Ballinger, TX -- near San Angelo) that morning at 11:15.
You talk about a good time (approx. 350 mi. in just over 6 hours) -- we were really hauling it!!  (LOL)

You're absolutely right!!  It was Luling (NOT Seguin) that experienced

this fact straight earlier, I don't know.

In Columbus there is a pretty decent lunch buffet at Schobels. 4 or 5 fresh
vegetable selections on a long steam table with a couple of meats such as
fried chicken, sausage, fried catfish, etc. a minimalist salad bar and some
decent slices of pie to finish. Kid friendly. Seems like the adult price
is in the $7. to $8. range.
