First of all let me say that I love Google Apps. It has been great for
our school. While it is not perfect, Google is providing a great
service to the educational market and others.
A particular area that I am greatly concerned about and I think needs
to be addressed as quickly as possible is the custom content that
users can add to the start page. Some of this content is just flat out
pornographic. It's bad enough that I see that junk as I'm browsing,
but even more so the fact that kids have easy access to this content.
If you agree that Google needs to address this issue quickly, post
your comment or idea of how Google can fix it.
I second that and would like to add the same issue presents itself
with youtube where there is a fair amount of highly relevant cultural
and educational content spoiled by the majority of the content. Right
around the time of the CNN Youtube Debates, "Britney Spears Vagina
Never Stops" was the number one most popular video. Could Google also
consider an education friendly video site?
This is huge. If google is serious about going after the k12 education
market, they are going to need to fix this problem. Have they
addressed "Add Stuff" somewhere else and I am just missing it?
I was about to implement the google apps system in my district, but
then I read this post and researched the start page. It is now the
only hold up with deployment. I don't want to waste time building a
web page that has half the function of the google start page. I just
won't use the system.

My district has the ability to block where the content is coming from,
but why do I want to spend the next 2 years tracing the content
originator and blocking as it comes up..... which is a lawsuit waiting
to happen. As it stands, about 1/3 of all the modules with "bad"
content are already blocked.
I also believe that content can be added even if the "Add Stuff" link
is gone, it is still possible to add stuff.

Please call Google Tech support if you are an education or premier
customer concerned about this. For contact details go to Manage this
Domain, Domain Settings, Account details. When you call support, use
option 3, service not working.
(Someone please post in the other thread that started this one if I
have not already. I can't seem to find it.)

I do believe it is the responsibility of the organizations to comply
with COPPA - Children's Online Privacy Protection and CIPA -
Children's Internet Protection Act. And if your school is using E-rate
discounted Internet services, CIPA compliance is a must, if I recall.
So if the services Google offers does not meet your needs at this
time, the correct answer was to not use them.

We're talking lingerie and bikini models so we're all probably within
compliance. The material is still innapropriate for kids. And this
category of content was not available, or not so prominent when I set
up my start page in the fall. I am disabling my startpage, which is a
total hassle to redirect everyone to new URLs for email and google
docs. But I'd like to challenge google: it's a little bit evil to put
these images in front of kids in school.
I think a company might even get sued for a hostile workplace in a
scenario where an employee complained the images made her
uncomfortable and the admins did not disable the startpage.
I'd like to be able to use the start page and I'm trying to humbly ask
google to "fix" this issue.
thanks,
jb

We recognize the importance of this issue. We are currently working on
a solution, and will post updates as soon as they are available. In
the meantime, the best option to prevent access to the gadgets is to
disable the start page by removing the service in your Google Apps
Dashboard and unpublishing your published page.

That is great news. What type of time frame are you looking at? Right
now I am about to begin a deployment company wide, but will hold off
if this will be fixed soon.

What's our time frame?
hour, week, month, year, decade?
I am ready to deploy for my school district staff of about 200. If it
works well, we will add our student body of about 800 next school
year, BUT I won't be deploying anything if the start page isn't fixed.
I need to plan accordingly.
Thanks!

I'm also curious about the estimated date when this will be 'fixed'.
I'm looking to roll GApps out over the summer to have it ready for the
start of school. I understand the workaround by disabling the Start
page, but with a new implementation the Start page is a wonderful tool
for people to begin with - showing them their mail and docs.
We just migrated our church over to Google Education account and I was
SHOCKED when the bookkeeper and the secretary brought to my attention
(on the first day with the new system) what they found when going to
the "add stuff" link. I agree with all the other comments that have
been made. We just gave them this over the weekend and this happens
on the first day!? And now we need to take away the start page to
remove the offending images? This is not good. So, what is the
priority on this? Can we see any official documentation on what's
being done about it and have a timeline to go with it?
Thank you for your attention to this issue.
