Subject: 502 error > 17 hours no access for my CEO : Bill W
My name:  Bill W
Domain name:  gm.sbac.edu
Hosting service:  N/A
Error message I'm seeing:  502
This post is marked as: Most important thing in my life right now

Details:  Since yesterday around at least 4:00pm my CEO cannot access his
mail. He gets a 502 temporary error. Support keeps telling me it is
affecting a small number of users. This is not a temporary problem if it
lasts this long. It is frustrating to not be able to expedite these issues.
I have to speak with the boss again and he's po'd. This is considered a
mission critical issue here. We may have to make other arrangements.
Apparently Google mail is not very reliable. I think I would have pushed
for something else before we switched if I had known the level of
unreliability.

Why are you not running your own mail server if email is that
critical? Even my 16-years old brother has his own.

MMTB is your CEO's problem, here.

The last time there was an outage, using https://mail.google.com/a/<domain>/?ui=html
worked for my users.
My domain is not experiencing this outage, so I can't say if this will
work or not in your situation.

I was able to go to your website at http://www.sbac.edu and then click on
the email lick which then took me to
https://www.google.com/a/gm.sbac.edu/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passiv...
<https://www.google.com/a/gm.sbac.edu/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passiv...>
that is the link that was on the http://www.sbac.edu page that then allowd

hmmm - you get what you pay for? ... why users think that all this
infrastructure just magically appears for their convenience is beyond
my comprehension.

lol, you can't be serious about this.  You all are using a free Email
service for business?  What kind of dumbass made that decision? I
would want to know, then fire that moron.

Free? It looks like a Google Apps account. After the 30-day free trial
Google Apps isn't free.

Yes it is. Only the non-free version (Premier) is not free. This has a
30 day free trial but it's not compulsory to try it.

I don't *entirely* agree with that statement.  In fact, I don't agree
with a lot of it :)

Just because something is 'free' does not mean that it should not
endevour to meet high standards of service and reliability.  HOWEVER,
people should be aware that they have no recourse if things DO go
wrong.  There is no SLA, there is limited official support.

For businesses/customers wanting immediate access to support via
telephone or via correspondance as well as ensuring that they are
compensated for when things do go wrong, they should look towards the
Premier edition rather than the Standard edition.

Since I've been using Google Apps as far back as 2006, I have not
encountered any major downtime.  I keep back-up email accounts in case
things do wrong (and things DO go wrong on the odd occasion even with
internal mail systems managed in-house no matter how good the planning
and expense).  I have never had to go without email for any
considerable length of time.  If it's REALLY urgent, I usually email
and then telephone the recipient to ensure that all is well.

A bit of planning and organisation goes a long way with modern digital
communications.

Regards,

Martyn
