Do you ski well enough to run this course?

When you ski at a resort, you might encounter a path that has something like short banners attached to two poles stuck in the snow. The fun, apparently, is in skiing down the path, threading your way among these markers. I understand that this kind of path is called _ポールバーン_ in JPN. Have even seen the word "pole bahn" on a JPN-oriented ENG ski site. But outside of Japan these courses are called. . .

Ray,
Entirely outside my realm, but Weblio lists "bahn" for バーン, and when
you look up "bahn" you get 走路 (as in Autobahn). International marriage
of English and German?

I thought "slalom" too, but if I recall correctly, this is a different kind of course with different obstacles (little flags very close together). . .

Could it be the "giant slalom"? This race seems to be similar to the slalom but with poles spread farther apart, apparently so that better skiers can go faster between them.

If you Google the two terms together (in katakana), you will find some sites where both are used. That may give you some insights into the intersection set.

I did a little searching and found this ski slope web site:
http://www.hunter.co.jp/winter/piste/pole.html

Looking around, I am pretty sure that ポールバーン refers to the slalom course where they hold both slalom (SL) and giant slalom (GS) races.

They also mention a "slalom trail" on their English site:
http://snow.gnavi.co.jp/guide/htm/r0067ens.htm

競技でつかう斜面は一般に、全てポールバーンとよんでました。

SL スラローム
GS ジャイアントスラローム
SuperG スーパージャイアントスラローム
DH ダウンヒル
