Here is a short sentence from a news release about a cylindrical grinder
used for processing rotogravure cylinders.

従来の落版工程は、荒研削－中研削－仕上げ研削か、旋盤－仕上げ研削のどちら
かでした。

Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with the rotogravure process to be
sure what 落版工程 means. Is this simply the engraving process itself,
or is it something more specific?

落版 probably means "plate removal", and refers to recycling.

From what I can gather, 落版 refers to the process of grinding the surface
of used copper cylinders so that they can be recycled and given a new
impression for printing a new image.

I suppose "recycling process" for 落版工程 is a poor
choice of words, simply because it does not indicate
what is being recyclied. "Plate recycling process."

Is that right? Just out of curiosity, are rotogravure cylinders usually
called "plates?" It wouldn't surprise me if they were, but I don't know,
so I'm asking.
