Hello Honyakkers,

I mostly do E to J translation and have been using
a Japanese read-out-loud software (Lala Voice) for a long time,
but I decided I need a similar one in English.

I hope to download a free software through the internet,
something that can read out loud a text in English.
I use Windows Vista and I'm located in Japan.

Could anyone recommend me one?
Are they all the same? Thank you in advance.

Obviously not very helpfull as an answer, but Mac OSX has a very good
English reading engine that comes with a very sophisticated voice. All
that comes with the system.

Thank you for your promt reply,
but I plan to stick to my Japanese Windows computer.
Btw, the Lala Voice came with my computer, which is very good
(has all types of Japanese voices and speed to choose from),
but unfortunately, my computer didn't come with any software
suitable for English readers/speakers.

How much does Apple pay you to be their ever-present, ever-vocal,

Assuming that you also use MS Word, you might find the following freeware
program helpful. I certainly do.

Funny, but Windows Vista also seems to have a program, called
Narrator, for reading of text, key strokes, system messages, etc.

Have fun,

But seriously, JC? He would never soil his hands with filthy corporate
lucre. He would lose all street cred with his fellow Akahata-reading,
Galoise-smoking revolutionary poseurs.

He would rather just nag people into paying his expenses by pretending he is
working "for the proletariat."

Thanks for keeping it real,

Alan

Interresting ! On a side note, do we have similar software for other
natural languages ?

Sorry, but the meaning of your question is not clear.
Who is "we" and what other natural languages are you interested in?

Thank you, Steven and Roland.
I tried to install Naturalreders but somehow it didn't work,
so I installed Wordspeaker which is working great on my MS Word!

Interestingly, the software came along with several
Toshiba great "Japanese" voices and one useless "U.S." voice
(probably because I use a Toshiba computer),
but the voice of "Microsoft Anna English (U.S.)" is wonderful.

Thanks again.

No, David, I don't know what you are referring to. Would you mind having
mercy on me and explaining the reference?

Well, it's not particularly merciful, but here it is.

Hi Yuko

I have not used the built-in Vista software but friends tell me it
works pretty well.
I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred and am pleased with it so far
My wild guess is that it is about 85 - 90% accurate, but this improves
as you train the program to learn words/phrases that you use often.

At first I thought it would make translating faster but in the end it
saves your wrists and back, which happens to be much more important in
the long run.
Have fun trying new things out (that is if you can find the
suggestions buried in the off hand comments)

Thank you Joel,

I did find your suggestion, but from a quick search,
I couldn't find any free-of-charge software
on the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred website page.

Also, probably because my computer is set up to be used
in Japan in Japanese language, English narrators don't come
with the computer itself. Only a Japanese reader is installed
(which is indeed very handly and is the reason I decided to
look for an English version).

All in all, I am pleased with Steven's suggestion,
but I welcome any alternatives.

Alan,

Sorry for my belated reply, but your apology is accepted by the OP.

For all I know, they do not publish any trial versions. It is a commercial
product so you will not find any free-of-charge variants.

The OP is looking for software reading text on the computer
screen to the user of the computer.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking is software which converts words spoken
by the computer user to text on the screen.

Have fun,

I would be interested in a Mac app which reads Japanese (I use the

Thank you for the Dragon info, gentlemen.

Koga-san, thanks for the great link, but I did do a bit of reseach
myself,
and if there is any software you'd like to personally recommend from
experience,
I'd appreciate it.

But as I mentioned previously,
I'm pleased with the Wordspeaker at the moment, too.

Even the "regular" JA OSX doesn't have one. It looks like OSX does
only English.
