My Setup
The unicorn is also great at making custom PCBs!!!

just print and find a servo and servo extension cord and save $80

Cool! If you have time, try making a video of how you use the
unicorn. I'd be interested to see how the system works.

I've had a bunch of problems with using sharpie's for making PCB's.
Usually ferric chloride etches through thin layers of it =( Although
it does augment toner transfer methods.

Perhaps we can invent a little spray unicorn which dispenses lacquer
or some really consistent and thick material.

Yikes - are those burn-through marks I see on the power connector?

Curious about the custom PCB fabrication -- I'm assuming you're using conductive ink for a positive transfer. If so, can you clue us in on what products you've had good results with?

I'm looking for ways to fabricate PCBs in my home shop without using etchant (per Wife/Baby mandate in the household), and am working on several CNC devices along that goal in spare time. Thanks!

Laurence,

Aside from chemical etching, I think you're just left with CNC milling
PCB's, or scratching em out by hand.

But after spending probably 200+ hours and >$400 on trying to get
homebrew PCB fab right, I've given up =) Barebones PCB's at 4pcb.com,
or batch PCB are just so much more economical for my time and money.

The problem is always that I have a need to use super tiny SMD parts
which need tiny 7 mil traces and isolation. It never etches just
right. I've been using toner transfer methods. I would not suggest
this to anyone. It's a PITA! If you want to try it, skip toner
transfer, and go with a photo transfer (UV + Developer) method
instead. But you still will have the problem of under-etching your
tiny traces.

The larger your traces and isolation, the more success you can
possibly get with etching things yourself. Stick to big parts if you
want to do homebrew.

Also, etched copper will oxidize like crazy, so you'll still need to
tin plate or solder coat everything afterwards. I like to use
cool-amp (http://www.cool-amp.com/) to silver plate my traces so I
don't generate more toxic chemical waste than I need to.

Jeremy,

Right there with you on trying to Home-Fab designs using SMDs, but that's the long-term goal of my smaller home-built CNC project. Farming it out is convenient, but the turnaround times take away a lot of the momentum when you've got the creative bug and wanna fit the final project into a tin.  I'm hoping to mill enough to handle 0402 parts, and 0.5mm pitch designs, which is just unthinkable with my sad results at chemical etching.

For quick projects, I've been using off the shelf SMD proto-boards and breakout boards.  I have soldering tweezers for simple rework; and for more involved work like motherboard repairs I've got an IR station (Jovy) to handle TSOPs and BGAs, and a fair amount invested in a reballing station, solder balls, and common templates. My old Xbox 360 Halo Edition must've been resurrected at least 3 times before I finally decided to retire the poor thing.

Does anyone in HiCapacity Have a RepRap?
I know that you guys ordered Printrbots(Wallace using gen6)
I am currently working on a Sae Prusa and having a hard time sourcing Sae parts.
Basically I have a frame that needs some locktite and all the electronics(barebones) Wanting to upgrade it to Lm8uu bearings later and maybe a heated platform.
I am currently having problems connecting Ramps(gen7 eletronics) to mac using this method http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:12781
I was hoping to get it running on ReplicatorG which i am familiar with from my Makerbot
The only thing i got was jittering motors, but it connected
I am totally new to this loading separate firmwares and configuring in the Arduino IDE like Marlin, Sprinter, TeaCup
I only have a school laptop thats a mac
Hoping for suggestions or help!!!!
Is anyone interested in getting a Rep Rap Prusa up and running

Well if you guys are still interested in making pcbs
This guy came to my school basically demoing a small cnc that they were taking preorders for i put my name and email never got contacted, anyway hes a local guy who owns a company called "the makery" and he basically runs classes on cnc machines for other teachers to teach there students and i guess he was trying to croud fund a cnc router that looked kind of like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KZqqSEMITo    (zen toolworks)
Also if i remember correctly the Unicorn when making smd leads can make 1206 size here is the link for instuctions
with a good example of a smd knight rider circuit http://wiki.makerbot.com/gerbertogcode
After making a lot of stupid mods to my xbox and having a lot of 0603 Blue leds I am pretty sure if you have a well calibrated makerbot you would be able to make small smd leads.
As for the etchent you got me on that i usually use the one from Radio Shack
I am hoping to get my reprap up and running with something like a paste extruder to maybe use conductive paint
this is the design for the pastetruder http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:20733

The Makery is run by Neil Scott, a professor at UH. He gets busy sometimes and won't respond to emails but we can try contacting him. You should stop by the space for our hardware Wednesdays. We can talk shop there.

How do I join? Do I just pay and go? Do I Bring my project? I was planning on going to the geek meet. I'm in high school but i will make the time to go. Thanks

Hi Ryan,

I think I can help you with getting your Ramps board up and running.  I have a couple of Makerbots and a couple of systems using RAMPS 1.4. You can contact me directly at 220-4451.

Ooh! Neil! We featured The Makery on HPR a while back, and Burt and I
got to tour their space at UH (at the time). Photos here:

I don't know why I didn't think to invite him to the Geek Meet. I'll
drop him a line now... though yes, I'm certain he's got a lot going
on!
