Subject: Super Islander VFO?
Arnie, Both Steve and I pored through SSDRA, and neither of us found a
Hartley-based VFO that didn't use FETS... anywhere else we could look
that would have a similar circuit?

Or, would would be our next best alternative for the VFO, factoring in
the best mix of simplicity and stability?

Thanks and 73,
Jason W6IEE

I thought, and I need to back and read again,  That they used Bipolar
transistors IN PLACE of the FETS.   As the FETs were unavailable.  And the
Bipolar ones were salvaged from some consumer item.

Hi Jason,

I don' t have SSDRA or EMRFD, yet. My experience is a bit limited, so
I started with a Pixie ][ and used its crystal controlled oscillator
for most other projects, receivers mostly.

Its usually implemented with a 2N2222 or a BC548 or 2N3904.
Its stable enough when used with a voltage regulator and encased in an
inch of polystyrene foam. What we in VK call an esky, perhaps what you
would call a cooler.

While there are more modern references,  Transistorized VFOs were
featured in Vol 11 No. 3 issue of GE Ham News, available here:
http://n4trb.com/AmateurRadio/GE_HamNews/ge_ham_news.htm

Some good ideas on mechanical stability if nothing else.  All they had
back in 1956 was bipolar, and barely that!
