Ruth sent me an email with an embedded photo which I can't seem to
copy in, but the concept is easy enough to explain: on top of tomato
cages, her friend wires a roughly 2x2 square of sturdy, tight-mesh
wire, attaching it with twist ties. I do this with full-window screens
that I buy at Resource for <= the $2/per cost her friend quotes. I
peel the paper off the ends of wire produce twist ties, so that they
will poke through the screen holes, and just wire the screens to
opposite sides of the top rim of the tomato cage.
We have a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms today and tonight, with a
possibility of severe hail (the greater chance is to the south and
east of us, but might be wise to take precautions anyway.)
