Eventually everyone needs to buy some new bedding. There are many
different items that make up what is generally termed bedding and a
little bit of knowledge about these items can help you decide what you
need and what you don't in your bedroom.
In basic terms bedding covers sheets, comforters, pillows and all the
other accessories that get put on beds. Let's learn a little something
about what you are putting the bedding on. A bed frame is what keeps
the headboard and foot board from moving around and what the box
spring rests on. The box spring is wooden frame with metal springs
throughout that supports much of the force placed on the mattress. The
mattress is the surface that you sleep on. Inside the mattress are
coils in one of many different configurations depending on the
manufacturer of the mattress. These coils are surrounded by filling
which take up the majority of the volume inside the mattress. The
material used for the filling determines the comfort level and quality
level of the mattress. Stretched over the frame of the mattress is a
thick fabric called ticking. Quite often a mattress has a feather bed
on top, which is an extra layer on top of the mattress usually filled
with down or feathers to provide an extra layer of comfort to the
mattress.
Well now what goes on top of the mattress? A sheet set's quality is
determined by the thread count. The thread count is the number of
vertical and horizontal threads per square inch. The higher the thread
count the softer and more durable the sheets are. Sheets are made from
several different materials but they all either fall under the
category of being natural or synthetic. Synthetic material is man-made
and artificially created. Most sheets are then covered by a coverlet,
a term used to describe any duvet, bedspread, comforter, blanket, or
quilt. Duvets are thick and usually filled with down feathers and are
ideal for winter weather. Quilts tend to be thinner and are made of
hand-stitched pieces sewn together with decorative cross-stitching.
You will no doubt find some form of coverlet comes in handy and even
if it's always warm coverlets can add a touch of style to your bed.
Canopies can hang in one of two ways. If you have a poster bed then
the canopy can be stretched from pole to pole. The other method for
hanging the canopy is straight from the ceiling over a hoop which
spreads the canopy over the bed. Canopy beds can add an elegant,
romantic touch to any bedroom. Canopy bed frames are offered in a
number of different styles from contemporary to classic. Once you have
the frame the canopy itself can be as simple a s a piece of fabric. In
fact if you get it cut right you may not even need to sew anything.
Knowing a few facts about bedding can make your next trip to pick out
bedding an enjoyable one. Don't forget to pick up bedroom decorating
accessories when you choose your bedding. As the style of your bedding
changes, you will need to change your decor to match. Add some
decorative picture frames, an elegant lamp, and some ornate candles
for soft lighting. Don't forget to add an area rug. Area rugs are the
centerpiece of any good design and bedrooms often get overlooked in
this aspect. When you choose your bedding, find an area rug with
complementary colors. Area rugs for the bedroom should be soft and
comfortable, so your feet are greeted with plush warmth each morning
when you step out of bed.
