I've just started using TaskPaper on the iPhone and I thought I'd give
it a try as my main calendar.  I've always been interested in using
plain text for a calendar but until now there's been no editor for the
iPhone that made this easy.  I realise that TaskPaper is for tasks but
it might just work as a calendar.  There's still quite a lot that
needs to be done manually but overall I like it as it's really easy to
enter and move appointments and tasks.

Anyone else using TaskPaper as a calendar or am I just a little
mad ;-)

I've also realised that TaskPaper makes an excellent generic
outliner.  It has the easiest (by far) method of indenting and moving
branches that I've seen.  The ability to collapse and expand directly
within the editing area would make this even better.

You could always tag items for when they start and/or when they are
due. Hacking themes is a bit weird, but I got mine to show upcoming,
starting, and due tasks in different colors. Combined with a few
simple searches, its pretty easy to drill down to what's on the agenda
for any day.

Tags are generally the answer to any "Can I do X with TaskPaper?"
question. IMO, anyway.

If you need folding (i.e. collapse/expand), I suggest using MacVim
with the vimoutliner plugin. If it isn't a crucial feature for you
though, I think TP makes a pretty great solution. I like to start my
writing projects in TP, if they are short. I'm also sure there's a
clever way to use tags to organize and navigate the file, but I
haven't ventured to try yet.

I'd say you're not completely mad. I never thought about using
TaskPaper as a calendar, but I'm not too far off with how I'm using
it.  Here's what I'm currently doing with TaskPaper... For each month,
I have a .taskpaper file with all the tasks I put in it. So this month
I have the file feb2010.taskpaper and it looks something like:

Feb 2:
- File taxes @done(2010-02-02)

Feb 11:
- Read iWoz @started(2010-02-13)

Feb 15:
- Call to schedule dentist appointment (ick!)

At the end of the month, I start a new file & copy over any
uncompleted tasks I still want to work on over to the new file.

I guess if something is due a certain date, you could add that in
there too. Something like

March 17:
- Wear something green :-)

If you want to take it to the extreme, you could modify the output of
the "cal" command from the Terminal & put that on the file. Sorry copy/
paste probably screwed up the spacing here. The only thing I modified
was moving "February 2010" over to the far left, added the : on that
line, and moved the first line of dates over a bit to (hopefully) line
up a bit better.
