  It&#39;s always the simple things.... Git tells me I had a #udate method &lt;br&gt; in PeopleController as well as EventsController: the two models with &lt;br&gt; which I had problems. I was supposed to be logged in as an &lt;br&gt; administrator, but I can&#39;t confirm now. I&#39;d have to reinvestigate. &lt;br&gt; Thank you very much for your time!

  Your problem was the relationship you describe is many units to &lt;br&gt; variable, while you&#39;re trying to reference a single unit. Easier than &lt;br&gt; having to do the find, is to use the associations themselves. &lt;br&gt; v = Variable.create(...) &lt;br&gt; v.units.create(...) #automatically assigns the newly created unit to v
