Croatian Day Picnic - 5 pm-11 pm After the 4 pm Mass at St. John's, the St. John's Catholic Club sponsors the annual Croatian Day Picnic on the Strawberry Hill Museum grounds at 4th Street and Barnett. Admission is free, and the picnic features food and drinks, raffles and dancing. Music is by the Don Lipovic Band.
Juneteenth Celebration - 10 am- 5 pm Sponsored by the KCK NAACP, the Juneteeth Celebration will be at Quindaro Park, 34th Street and Sewell. Admission is free, and food, entertainment and concessions will be available. Juneteenth honors the date in 1865 that slaves in Texas were made aware of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued two years earlier. The festival will be held at 13th and State Avenue and admission is free. This year's Living History Tribute Show features Myra Taylor, who is the queen of the 2008 fest. Also, a Blues After Party will be held Saturday night at the Koran Temple, 1234 State Avenue. Admission is six dollars and the entertainment features Kool-Aide, Millage Gilbert and KC Kelsey Hill from 10 pm until... Lawnchairs and coolers are welcome at the festival and concessions will be available. Saturday, July 26 - Bus Trip to Nicodemus, Kansas The Wyandotte County Democratic Black Caucus sponsors a bus trip to the Annual Homecoming Celebration in Nicodemus. Nicodemus was the first black settlement in Kansas. Bus leaves at 5 am from KCK; returns at 10 pm. The bus trip costs $60 per person.
