So let's count the bullshit messages in this commercial:
1) Attempts to break the culture of disposable electronics are foolish
2) Cellphones are best left to the "professionals"
3) You're not a whole person unless you have the latest cellphone
4) Women find DIY annoying
5) DIY is a desperate attempt by emasculated men to try to reassert their masculinity (thus, also, the lumberjack look)

Folken-a-right

But this does have me re-thinking my latest project .. an Msp430 powered "dong-cellerometer" that displays pov messages when you "wave it about" "under the right circumstances".

This commercial has made it clear tjat my choices were driven by misplaced emotions and that I may even be compensateing for something .. so I am switching to an Arduino instead.

Can you blog this garbage? Maybe the title could be:
US Cellular calls us all aspy makerfags
US Cellular thinks fixing your phone is only for manbabies
US Cellular has no clue who designs the shit they sell
US Cellular vows to only accept money from stupid consumers henceforth.

If you've ever been proud that you fixed something, US Cellular says you shouldn't be. Just buy it again.

I like the manbabies one and the last one.

That's really frustrating and I completely support posting a response.
As the owner/operator of a female body, I've felt the clammy grip of
negative advertising once or twice (a day....for my whole life...) so I
have some experience in this area.

For inspiration, I point you to Sarah Haskins' defunct but wonderful
"Target Women" series that critiques advertising. Her mix of sarcasm
and specific critique is really great. Maybe it will give you some
ideas for how to craft an awesome response. Here's one of my favorites:

That was pretty freaking brilliant.

Yeah, the advertising industry in general is pretty screwed up. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm not the target demo here. I'm the butt of jokes from the target demo.

Ugh, can I just quit the world, please? Not life, just the world.

This is hilarious because they are actually threatened by makers. The best response would be video, and hey, I just happen to work in that field. Let me know if you are game.

I am certain cellular companies are not threatened by makers, they just felt they were an easy punchline. Marketing is often completely divorced from all other operations of a company.

While they might have been mocking someone fixing a phone, the truth is that providing phones is a cost sink for them, they only provide them as a way to lure people from other carriers and then to retain those customers. Since the phones are not a profit center for them they absolutely would prefer you keep working with your old/broken/kitbashed phone as long as you can.

Yeah it's a pretty stupid commercial. I mean, most commercials are stupid, and this one doesn't seem to portray maker folk too positively. But I always consider it a sign that something's starting to get big when there's a stupid commercial mocking it. So is the "maker movement" now officially all big and popular and mainstream?
