Hello everyone,
My name is Doug. If you've been to at least one open house in the last
5 or 6 months, chances are you've seen me. I'm the crazy guy that
travels 3 hours by bike, bus, train, and foot to visit Hive76 for 3 to
5 hours, and then turn around and go back. I'm looking to apply for
dismembership, mostly so that I can continue to visit the space to
work on projects if my work schedule changes in such a way that coming
to open house is impossible, and partly to make PJ, Brendan, and
Jordan stop bugging me :P.
Now for the questionnaire:
1. What do you hope to gain from Membership at Hive76. e.g. what will
being a Member allow you to do that you can't do simply by coming to
public events such as open house? Are there skills you plan to learn
at Hive? Collaborations you are looking forward to?
In addition to what I mentioned above, I'd like to be able to come to
the space if I've got an idea for a project I'm working on and some
free time to try it out, but the tools and/or resources I need aren't
available to me at home. I'm always open to learning new things,
particularly related to project ideas I have. I'm currently helping
set up the one server that was stashed in a corner at the space to
provide virtual machines for members, and can also be used for future
classes, etc. I'm also working on making a keyboard re-mappable in
hardware, so that it can be converted to a Dvorak layout or whatever
in the keyboard itself, rather than depending on operating system
support.
2. What do you plan to give to Hive76, that will benefit the
space/membership, e.g. skills you are bringing to Hive you are willing
to share/teach others, classes you envision that you could teach if
there is sufficient interest, anything else?
I have knowledge in programming (C is my language of choice, but I
also know Java, C#, and Visual Basic), computer hardware and software,
TTL and CMOS discrete logic, and the various hardware skills required
when working with electronics. I've also worked with several
different microcontrollers, including Parallax's Basic Stamp and
Propeller, the Arduino, and the Teensy++ v2.0, which uses the Atmel
AT90USB1286. I'm always willing to share this knowledge with others,
in whatever format they'd like.
3. Please provide constructive criticism of Hive76. What are we doing
well? What are we lacking? What could we do better? What brought you
to Hive and where do you see Hive76 going in the future?
I suck at providing criticism and feedback, but in my opinion, Hive76
is great, and I don't think anything needs to change. I love the
environment, and I love coming to open house every week (if I didn't,
why would I travel 3 hours to do so? heh). The members here really
know their stuff, and it's really cool to see the various projects,
and lend a hand where I can.
Well, that's all I have. If you have any questions, feel free to ask
me, either in person, via email or via IRC.
