Hello everyone. My name is Marie Le Pichon and it's been great getting to know you all and learning about Hive over the past few weeks. I was hoping to apply for membership and PJ was kind enough to offer to be my sponsor, so thanks PJ!
I hope it's ok if I don't answer the questionnaire in exactly the same format it's presented on the wiki but will definitely try to cover all the questions that are presented there. Like I said, I'm Marie and I moved to Philadelphia just over a year ago. Before that I was in Georgia (originally from Texas) getting a degree in Interactive Design and Game Development. I originally entered the major thinking I wanted to do concept art for video games (I spent the bulk of my senior year in high school painting and cutting out life size Final Fantasy characters) but then I took a programming class and fell totally in love with it. Not long after that I took a Physical Computing class and I knew that I had found what I wanted to do with the rest of my life (I know, so corny, but how can you not be about the things you love).
I have a passion for new technology. I don't just want to learn how to use it, I want to explore what we can use it for; whether it be for games, art, science, or, my personal favorite, to better understand what it means to be human. I feel like college opened me up to a whole new world, but I also feel like I know so little. The two most important things I hope to gain from Membership at Hive76 are knowledge and motivation. If you can teach it, I want to learn it. I have a little experience building things… I mean really random things, big wooden platforms, sound domes, levers, wheels, pulleys, giant plexiglass boxes (for future reference, DO NOT buy the cheap plexiglass when you're building anything that has the word "giant" in it… wish someone had warned me) but really, I have no idea what I'm doing and I know there is so much that the members at Hive could teach me.
Things I love and would love to share my knowledge of include: Processing (using it to work with cameras and arduino), openFrameworks (also more particularly using things like ComputerVision), cooking (my specialties include steak (I have a "How To: Cook a moist and tender steak every time" recipe… seriously) and homemade french fries that taste like fast food french fries (I know… why don't you just drive to get the french fries… but hey, you can't get my steak there lol)), and how to solve a rubik's cube (3x3 or 4x4). I also love working with kids and think it would be great to figure out a way to share my knowledge with the next generation.
On a different note, I would also love to help Hive with its advertising/marketing/pr/event planning/graphic design or anything else in that field that may be of use to the group. I work part time at a grade school in Lower Merion doing exactly that and have also organized a few museum openings and events and would be more than happy to help you with it if you needed it. If Hive is open to it, I would love to work on collaborative projects to enter in different festivals/events, as well as help organize, market and host classes and events of our own (I love to organize things… lol).
I'm here in Philadelphia for at least another two years… and then hopefully… grad school. But while I'm here, I really hope I can become an integral part of your community. I should probably end on that note as you've most likely already rolled your eyes at least once while reading this thinking "this is SO LONG". If you're interested in learning more about any of the work I've done in the past you can check it out at marielepichon.com
Best,
Marie
P.S. I do a lot of freelance graphic design and have a meeting tonight that I hope will end early enough for me to be able to attend the open house but either way, I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Marie, I've enjoyed talking with you the few times we've coincided at the
space. If I ever get around to working on game projects again, we'll have
to talk. Really interested to see the work you could do here in the space.

Thank you! That project was insane... and insanely hard to put together. Who would have thought it would be so hard to build simple machines *_*. On top of it all after putting it together I had to hook them up to sensors that had to register the movement of the machines and were connected to arduino boards that could, of course, NOT be visible to anyone and to which I can attribute my ridiculously huge collection of usb extensions. And don't even get me started on the plexiglass encasings (you would be surprised at how aggressive little kids will get when you tell them: this lever will move that spaceship)... lol

That is completely reasonable... steak is exciting. Actually, if you
want an awesome steak I highly recommend building a water oven using
an immersion circulator and a PID, I bet there are enough spare parts
around Hive, and if you like thick steaks cooked medium rare all the
way through it is really the way to go. I have a spare heating element
somewhere if someone wants to try to build one.

And don't even get me started on the plexiglass encasings (you would be surprised at how aggressive little kids will get when you tell them: this lever will move that spaceship)... lol

When I blew the SSR on mine I decided I used it enough that I wanted
to go with a commercial one and see how well that worked, so I have a
Sous Vide Supreme Demi as well as most of the parts one needs for the
science experiment version minus the actual controller the SSR was a
part of. I suspect I have a type thermocouple, but I honestly can't
remember.

WOW. This: "thick steaks cooked medium rare all the way through" is exactly how a steak should be cooked. And anything you could teach me to build that would help accomplish this sounds like a lot of fun lol.

My schedule has been pretty hectic, so I have not been at open houses
recently, but if people are interested I could bring over a working
Sous Vide setup, an induction burner to sear the edges, and a couple
of steaks to sample sometime in the next 2-3 weeks.
