I just found out about this:

http://texas.raamchallenge.com/rs/index.php?N_webcat_id=275

It's on March 17 (St. Patrick's Day, one week before our 400K), and
they've got a 120-mile fully supported gran fondo (11-hour time
limit), a 200-mile self-supported or crewed race (17 hours), and a 400-
mile crewed RAAM-qualifier race (34 hours). Registration fees seem
reasonable, e.g. $70 for the gran fondo, $115 (including finisher's
jersey, if you finish before the cutoff) for the 200-mile.

Nice to see that RAAM picked the Texas Hill Country as one of nine
venues for this series.

After the Austin Marathon I'm going to start riding regularly again,
and I'll have four weeks to get ready for this. Could be good
motivation. Anyone else tempted?

We should be flattered that California based Raam, has chosen our State for
one of their growing number of Raam Qualifiers/races (13 with more being
added at a quick pace). Although many think Raam plans to flood the market,
obtain dominance and ultimately rule an overpriced "Race in a Box" Profit
orientated Monopoly. I'm a "More the Merrier" guy and very glad to have
them, as long as it grows the sport and does not make for a bunch of
sparsely attended races and as long as it does not ultimately put other
races out of business, resulting in making Raam Qualifying and Ultra racing
unaffordable.

Many of us have worked hard to build an Ultra Cycling community, and I think
shows. I hope that you will also consider allocating some of your race time
to support the "Home Grown" Ultra Races of Texas. We have organized The
Texas Ultra Cup Challenge, and would love for you to give it a taste
http://www.tt24tt.com/ then click on The Texas Ultra Cup for details.

A good race experience is much more than the Venue or the organizer, it's
the volunteers, and type of friendly people that it attracts.

I hope I have the time to attend The Raam Race, I'd like to. I'll be at all
three of the Texas Ultra Cup races for sure.

See ya on the road, DanD

I think I will do the Gran Fondo and use it as a training ride for the 300k the next weekend.
