What's the "rule"? Do most tip at Tim's? And what's the rationale
for tipping at coffee shops when most wouldn't tip at fast-food
joints, corner stores, etc?
db
No one's supposed to tip at fast food places. That's one of the
reasons they are popular.
don't think there's any rule..
i tip at Tim's.. my coffee, when i buy one, is important to me..i tip if
i'm served in a timely manner with a smile.. if the server is rude,
impatient, or pre-occupied by other than being busy with work, i won't
tip..
also, i generally only go to certain Tim's..and i know the people who
work at those stores from dealing with them regularly..so i tip them..
just my personal preference..

Yes but they repeatedly walk 3 feet to get everyone's order. ;)
I usually give some of the change I get back. If everyone gave even 10 cents
in the run of a day ..woah. ;)
I have never understood why people 'tip' at Tim Horton's. Most of the time,
the service is so bad, that the people working aren't even earning their
pay.
The 'rule' used to be, you leave a tip for a waitress or waiter that has
provided you with exemplary service. Now-a-days, it almost seems, that
people are too lazy, to put their money back into their pockets.

This has been a debate around my place for a long time...and I thought I was
rational..but on this issue I am not. For some reason I always leave a litte
something at Tim's but never at a fast food place...hmmmm...
Ok..I'll go ponder that...

I give them the dime that's left over...more if I order more. The rationale
would be the same as a bartender...usually when I get to the counter my
coffee is ready for me to go...
Fast food joints owe McDonald's for the lack of any tipping...when
McDonalds was first coming out they had ads that specifically said "No
Tipping"...

But that is their job which they are already getting paid to do.
At my "home" Tim's I usually leave a nickle or dime on an extra large,
others it depends on the service, except for the drive thru on Wyse Rd. I
never never tip there steming from an incident when the waitress decided
that my change (4 cents to be exact) was her's and not mine even when I
asked for it (she actually argued with me over it). This was the second
time it hapened there and so, no tipping for me there.
The not passing back the change also happened at my "home" Tim's as well,
but a quiet word to the manager on duty quickly stopped that from
happening again. She was more annoyed than I was over it

I've never allowed anyone to fuel my vehicles up. Even if I did, why in the
world would I tip them for doing their job?

If I see any coffee slopping over the cup or dripping that I have to deal with,
it's 'no tip'.
I like the story about the man at a diner who had received less than stellar
service, the food wasn't all that good, and the waitress seemed to have a
perpetual snarl on her face. She brought him the check and he happend to have
exact change, and that's when the waitress said "what about a tip?" And the man
said "you want a tip? don't eat here."

I have pumped fuel for to earn few extra dollars in my younger youth (I'm
now in my older youth) I have also received the odd tip for doing so.

If I buy gas at Wilson's and if I use full service I always give the
person the 2¢ per Lt. cash discount.
Mind I only use full service if it is reak cold or raining hard. That
worth a small tip. $1.00 - $2.00
ot
Yea but in those days you did have to pump it...up into the glass
container on top of the pump that had the gallons marked on the side
and then it was gavity feed into the car.
Remember those pumps?
AT night you would cut the engine and lights and coast into the pumps,
which were usually ouside a store and the owner lived upstairs,
drained the hose which gave you maybe 15¢ worth of gas...or about 1/2
Gal.
You look young for your age. :-)

>>if the service comes to me, I tip. If I have to wait
in line for the service, I don't.<<<
That's good advice <g>.
Anyone that asks/begs for a tip, doesn't get one.

Until recently, I wasn't aware that tipping gas station attendants was
the ettiquette. Now I try to remember to tip them when I don't pump my
own. It makes sense to tip them. Consider that they clean your
windows, check your fluids, and occassionally check your tires. I
would think that those activities warrant a tip.
Cheers
Interesting.

I guess that's what I was wondering... My understanding is that some
employees are paid With the Expectation that their tips will make up
for otherwise crappy wages; bartenders and waiters would be examples.
So... when the manager/supervisor/whatever at Tim's determines what a
new employee's wage will be, is tipping taken into account?

what grocery store around here allows you to check your items out yourself?
SuperStore has that technology.

I dont use it tho for the following reason...
6 cash registers
1 cashier operating all 6
that means 5 other cashiers not working which means not making money.

Good point Mike. I have never used it either, but, it's more because I enjoy
having someone else bag my purchases (and, sometimes, have a pleasant
conversation).

You're right. They don't even smile at you <g>. Of course, there are a
cashiers like that too!
That's for sure....the lineups are much shorter at the self
serve...I'm usually not buying that much so I find it's much easier.
There are six lanes but I'll guarentee that's not cutting out six
cashiers jobs.
Do you pump your own gas ?? If you do, aren't you worried about all
the attendants out of work ? How about bank machines...lot's of
tellers out of work...etc...etc.
although some of the young ones can be cranky as well... but still
nice to look at.
I pump my own gas because it's rare that there is a gas station that
has the full serve option
TELLERS -
I bank with PC FINANCIAL so it's rather difficult dealing with a
teller on that one.
Not at all. We are hearing the comments of the various people involved in
the discussion, on a computer monitor.

Quick.. I'll pass the virtual coffee cup if you virtually fill it up.
:)
With virtual coffee and virtual service, do we have to leave virtual
tips? How much would be appropriate?

If it was, the amount is entirely up to your discretion. ;^)
