While in Mexico a few weeks ago we bought something we would like framed. It
is a piece of suede leather with some Mayan thingy painted on it. This was
just a touristy piece of art work and we only paid something like seven
dollars for it. Upon taking it to Maritime Frame It we were told it would
cost in excess of $400 and when someone suggested we go to Kent or Home
Depot they were giving us prices of $250+. Has the world gone mad? Does
anyone out there have any suggestions for getting this dang thing framed.

I'd try Crafts Canada.. I don't know their prices but surely it's not as
expensive as $400. Roughly 1/4 of each of their locations are dedicated to
framing, as far as I saw when I was there yesterday. They're in Burnside and
also on Bayer's Rd. When they reopen for business tomorrow, give them a
call...

Try Japan Camera in Penhorn Mall. They do custom framing there, and it's
nowhere as expensive as some of those other places.....give them a try,
their customer service is great as well.

I was to Mexico and I think I know which leather pieces/pictures you are
talking about.
I went to Wal-Mart bought a large frame, (my hanging is a larger one) it was
12 or $15 for the frame and matting, put the hanging in it and hung it.
Worked OK for me. On some of the older frames the backing does not fit snug
enough to keep the weight of the leather hung, you can either put a heavier
cardboard in to make it snug or tape the hanging onto a matting, or if no
matting put tape on the back of the hanging to stick to the back of the
frame cover.
A brightly coloured frame looks good with the bright Mexican colours, I
really like mine with the forest green frame and my living room walls are a
clay colour. I stayed in Playa del Carmen and Tulum great places, great
beach, sun, water and sunshine. Just wish I did not have to come back to
reality!

Some Polish friends gave me a WWII map of a border town, half in German
and half in Polish, and I asked my cartographer/map librarian/map dealer
buddy where to take it. He says he takes all his stuff to Hall Of Frame
on Quinpool Road.

My art collector buddy said the same thing.

Anyway, they did an unbelievable job on the map. The map had some tears
places and small chunks missing and while they didn't exactly replace
it, but they made it almost invisible.

They have a big selection of frame materials too, including hundreds of
colours, styles, and widths that you'd swear were antique.

Yep, I get all my framing done at Hall of Frame (mostly rare movie
posters). As Phil the owner says "You can bring it to me now, or you can
bring it to me later." In other words, most framing places don't do jobs
that last, esp with delicate or light paper items. I learned my lesson
with a movie poster that started to buckle in the frame (I had it done at
some place in Clayton Park that's no longer in business), and show signs
of condensation under the glass. I took it to Phil, and he remounted it
using the materials I had (frame and glass) but in a way that secured the
poster and let it breathe so moisture wouldn't build up.

I've got a couple of pieces in there now....I can't wait to see how they
turn out!

I should add though, for things like stills and 11X14 lobby cards, there
are *some* nice frames at Wal-Mart, but they're on stiff paper and easier
to deal with. For a large piece or actual artwork (painting or print) Hall
of Frame is the way to go.
