Hi- A playa friend of mine introduced me to the hexayurt, and I'm
pretty intrigued. After reading these posts it seems like the proper
materials are hard to come by. I think I'm going to buy a sheet of
Tuff-R to build a mini hexayurt with... and possibly do a videotapped
fire test. If I decide to go ahead and build full size for the playa
this year I'd be interested in sharing a shipment of 6" bi-directional
tape with somebody(s). It seems like it may even take a cross-country
sharing situation, unless I can find other hexayurt builders in
Colorado (I"m currently looking.) Just introducing myself here, and
stay tuned for fire test footage.

Hello, Ian, that would be fabulous - we really need to figure out
this fire situation, and I think getting some data is a great place
to start. Videotaping would be excellent.

In terms of folks in Colorado - Ranger Duney Dan is in Colorado, and
there are burners in Denver who might be into it - http://
www.apogaea.com/ - has a strong dome presence, and lots of dome folks
love hexayurts.

Please let me know how I can help. Maybe we should set up an
Appropedia page for people who want to do group buys to coordinate?

Hey Ian!

I haven't done my mini hexayurt model yet, so I'd be interested in how
it smells. (Vinay noted before, that the tuff-R with blue or pink
tends to smell.)

Personally, I wouldn't be worried about the fire hazard. Tents go up
in seconds, and between that and all your gear in the tent, there's
tons of toxins that would be released anyways.

The thing about tents is that they're fairly light - not that much
energy is in the skin of a tent, and if it burns, odds-are you'll be
able to run out of it, even if you have to go through the fire. My
concern is that Tuff-R is a good deal heavier, meaning a lot more
energy there... very different kind of fire.

Anyway, my main concern is that we get down to the science and know
for sure rather than guessing. I'm in Europe so I can't easily test
myself, hard to get a directly equivalent material, although there
are lots of european variants.

I have no doubt that it's nasty when it burns. It probably burns
slow, but the fumes will get you. So even if it's just smoldering,
those toxins will kill you.
