The only thickness Tuff-R/Thermax I can find is the 1/2" thickness.
Will this work for the 8' hexayurt?

No, 1/2" is too thin.

Would enough good tape add structural strength enough to use 1/2" for an 8'?

I just built a quarter scale model with 1/2" thick tuff-R and I don't think that would be nearly strong enough to do a full scale hexayurt. I know that Home Depot around here carries the 1 inch thick Tuff-R, so I would assume that any Home Depot would be able to order it for you if they don't have it.  By the way, I will be filming my fire test on the 1/4 scale model soon... stay tuned.

Ian, that rocks, and thank you. I'm looking forward to seeing the footage and settling this once and for all!

Half an inch material isn't going to be reliable on the Playa. Just maybe 1/2" Thermax HD, but really... 1" is what you need.

I found 3/4" Tuff-R, will this be structural sufficient for an 8' yurt
under non-extreme conditions such as the Texas Hill country (Max wind
speeds of 20mph and plenty of trees to use as cover)?

Consider sandwiching two 1/2" sheets together with construction adhesive, that would likely be stronger than a single 1" sheet.

this is interesting.. have there been any thoughts about integrating a pvc (or alternative) exo or inno skeleton with a lighter weight foam paneling?

I know this goes against the hexayurt concept but from a cost, and wind perspective once you double up the sheets it opens up many new questions. Fiberglass rods to keep it's shape? Anchored netting to keep it from flying away? PVC geodesic dome with Tuf-R panels?

hmm..

How about finding a large regional distributor and putting together a
group order for full pallet?

(such as Bill Wiltschko organized for us here in northern California
– many, many thanks!)

I think you'll all be much, much happier with a Thermax HD hexayurt
rather than a Tuff-R unit. The Tuff-R units don't do well in rain,
and they don't do well with being banged about in transit, and they
have this open question about fire risk.

In terms of other things to make hexayurts out of: google honeycomb
panel or the more general term, sandwich panel, and you'll see tons
of options from about $50 per board up to about $300 a board.
Aluminium, steel-faced styrofoam, plastic honeycomb... endless
options. I haven't worked too much on those kinds of options because
they're kind of expensive for the refugee set, of course, but they
are out there.

Have you asked Home Depot etc. about special ordering you some 1"
Tuff-R?

I spoke with Home Depot today. Looks like they are phasing out the
whole product line. With no indication of what or when they might be
replacing it with.

Wow. Phasing out Tuff-R specifically, like switching to R-MAX or
something, or phasing out polyiso entirely?

Very strange indeed...

Well, the other approach is to look at cardboards, honeycombs and
similar products, or to call your local Dow rep and have them special
order you some Thermax HD.

I'm really sorry you're having problems with the materials, that's so
strange. Every time I ever wanted to build one I just went to home
depot and they had what I needed.

Keep me posted, please.
