Yeah, I can confirm the same issue on Arch Linux. This appears to have
something to do with Ruby 1.9. First of all, the 'json' gem is unnecessary
on 1.9, it is included in the standard library.

I would use a background job to process the information—Heroku does
not support long-running HTTP requests for performance reasons. This
will give a better user experience anyway. Just have the information
loaded through AJAX (poll for the status)
[link]
On Dec 24 2009, 6:44 am, Malta Trip Planner

Yes, I think this is because the Heroku console evaluates each line as
it's being sent. In this way it's more like Capistrano's shell than ./
script/console or irb.
What I would do is condense that into an inline block like this:
people.each{ |person| puts person.to_s }
If you need more complicated statements your best bet is to run it as

My advice would be to pull data from the external website in the
background and then cache the result. In fact, any time a request
depends on an external resource, the best practice is to relegate it
to the background. You could then refresh the cache manually or set a
cron job to refresh the cache every hour.

There are a number of issues [1] [2] [3] with heroku gem failures due
to the dependency on json-1.1.0. There are not yet any clarifying
responses as to why a more recent version of json can not be used.
The heroku gem used to install and work fine for my setup up through
1.5.2, but every version since then appears to be broken.

Yes, multiline commands are not currently supported.
You can always abbreviate commands into a one liner though. Or yeah
writing a rake task might be the best option.
