This list is for the all-British Hems Family - Adam, Jade and children Jasmine and Daisy. We are now living in Rosenburg, TX, USA after moving from England in 2000. Messages consist of occasional updates on what we are all up to down here in the Heart o' Texas! :-)

"My, haven't they GROWN..."
|
| |
The weather is beautiful, Jade's garden looks fabulous and the girls looked particularly fetching this morning which meant it was a good time for Adam to try out some different lenses with the garden as a fetching backdrop. We're quite pleased with the results :-) [link]... more »

A slow recovery in Houston...
|
| |
Houston really took a massive beating in the storm: [link] Most of the pictures labeled as being taken in Texas are in the Houston area (around us), or Galveston (60 miles south of us). Pretty bad. All the hotels in town are full of people whose homes are uninhabitable; a number of Adam's colleagues have had to evacuate to surrounding cities. 30,000 people are in shelters. Half the city is still without power but luckily for them a cold front swept in and the weather is beautiful today (70 deg F / 21 deg C) and no A/C is required. However stores that don't have power can't operate properly; our local stores still don't have power and so don't have any food, which we are starting to run out of... We are hoping that they get back on their feet and have some deliveries by the end of the week or else Adam will be checking a new suitcase full of food on the flight back from New Orleans!... more »

Hurricane Ike has left
|
| |
Well Ike has wandered off up to the North of us to wreak more havoc and meanwhile we've been assessing the damage in daylight. Jade's beloved Bird Garden is looking pretty battered and one or two plants need to be tucked back in their beds but otherwise everything seemed to have come through all right. The palm trees look positively invigorated but then again they are native to the area so should be used to it... The new flower bed at the front lost one plant but the others look like they made it ok. Certainly, they all needed the rain! The lawn is a bit of a boggy marsh at the moment and with temperatures a rather cool 77 deg F / 25 deg C everything will be pretty wet for a couple of days (which will do the plants some good!)... more »
