Greece's Defense Ministry says it will scrap mandatory service in the
navy and airforce in 2012 following defense spending cuts.
Defense Minister Evangelos Venizelos said Friday that during the
transition these two branches of the armed forces will seek conscripts
with specialist skills, including doctors and chemical engineers.
Military service in Greece is compulsory for all men aged between 18
and 45. A nine-month mandatory service will remain for the army.
In recent years, Greece's armed forces have become increasingly
reliant on professional recruits.
Friday's measures were announced a day after defense spending cuts
worth million ($738 million) were revealed as part of the 2010 state
budget.
