History

In 1971, Helix was founded in order to promote social interaction among biological sciences students demonstrating superior academic and leadership capabilities.

In 2002, Helix was invited to join the National Biological Honor Society Beta Beta Beta. Helix, formally known as the Xi Eta chapter in BBB, was inducted into the organization in 2003. This affiliation offers many more opportunities for Helix/BBB members though the workings of our group have changed very little.

Annually, Helix/BBB participates in various activities and competes in intramural sports. Comradeship is the heart of Helix/BBB, manifested in abundant social get-togethers with Helix/BBB members, advisors, and professors in the College of Biological Sciences. Helix/BBB actively advocates the excellence of the College of Biological Sciences at The Ohio State University. During Winter quarter, Helix/BBB hosts Biological Sciences Day, a program devoted to demonstrating the numerous opportunities to students majoring in the Biological Sciences.

Service

The health needs of children are particularly close to the heart of Helix. Every year, Helix Tri-Beta helps with the regional Patches of Light Walk-A-Thon, which raises money to help with hospital expenses for children with cancer or blood disorders who stay at the Columbus Children’s Hospital.  Last year we were able to raise over $4,000, and we hope to meet a new goal of $5,500. One requirement of our organization is for the members to participate in a volunteer activity each quarter at the University. In the past, we have tutored children once a month at the Lockborne Middle School and visited the Whetstone Care Center bi-weekly to play B-I-N-G-O with Alzheimer patients.

We our currently involved in the Columbus community, volunteering at:
  • Patches of Light Walk-a-thon
  • OSU's Recycle Dump and Run
  • OSU Medical Center
  • Suicide Prevention Hotline
  • EmBracelet
  • Meals on Wheels
  • Raising awareness for Ovarian Cancer
  • Relay for Life
  • Buckeye-thon

Biological Sciences Conference Day

This is a singular day in the spring that introduces high school students to the expansive opportunities offered by the College of Biological Sciences at the University.  We arrange for professors from eight different specialties and students who are engaged in research on campus to speak about their contribution to the University and how incoming freshman can get involved.  We also invite the high school juniors and seniors and their parents to tour our greenhouse, insect laboratory, and microbiological research facilities.  Last year, our Bio Sci day was held on MARCH 1st, 2008
