I'm interested in getting certified on the mill and the lathe (primarily on the mill), for the 3D printer project I'm working on.  I know Jasper is in charge of that area so if you could get in touch with me about it that would be great!  Thanks!

Jasper Nance does the mill certification class. And a guy from 23b may be dropping by in a week or two, who expressed interest in teaching some classes on milling and such. That may be another chance to learn as well.

Heya, who'd be interested in a hypothetical mini-mill class this Wednesday night? Raise your hands high where I can see em!

Absolutly interested, though not totally sure if it will fit my schedule or not.

I'm definitely interested!  Are you referring to just a how-to class or are you planning on it being a certification class?

I'm in if there are still spaces available. Looks like a lot of interest.

Joel.

Hey everyone! Register quick, class size is limited to 6 in order to give everyone a chance at hands-on (and being able to see anything): https://guestlistapp.com/events/134562

If you can't afford it or tickets run out, feel free to stop by anyway in case there's room to spectate. We'll be milling STEEL on the LARGE BLUE MILL instead of the normal aluminum on the mini-mill; Chris and Jasper feel it's safe, and it's a better leg-up towards using our shiny new CNC Mill than messing around with the mini.

If you want to pay via Dwolla/cash/credit instead of PayPal, please email me so I can reserve a ticket for you.

Please read the Metalworking & Mill guide on the wiki beforehand so you arrive prepared: http://wiki.heatsynclabs.org/wiki/Rules#Metalworking_Tools

hey guys!

this class should be a good primer for the machine shop at HeatSync.  this will be a very basic overview of milling practices and techniques.  machining is an art, and i'm going to show you how to use a brush - i cannot make you an artist after one class, it takes many hours of practice and dedication, as well as a few scrapped parts and broken tools.  don't be intimidated / discouraged, though.  hopefully, after this class, there'll be a stronger baseline of machining knowledge that others can benefit from.

Really?  I raised my hand early, but now it's sold out and can't get in.  This wasn't the fairest way to do this I don't think.  I think there were at least 6 interested persons already committing in this thread to Wed.

Tweetsync linked to the class ~4 hours ago, and Will linked to it ~8 hours ago.

Sorry, man.  I've been waiting for this class too... :(

I would not have been able to do this class tomorrow so I'm in for the
next class (if one is offered). With Brian and myself, that's at
least two so far. Michael would make three. Would the instructor be
willing to hold another session soon?

Perhaps we should record this class? The teacher (named chris? Posts as machinist) is very experianced, but is only visiting while in town on business. Recording/taking notes should give us a good foundation and more people who can teach this class going forward.

i'd recommend recording this class for future reference, but again, watching a video != actually using the machine with your hands

it MIGHT be possible for me to put on another milling class on thursday, since there's definitely enough interest.  i'll talk to will and jacob about it.

is anybody interested in the lathe?

BTW, I have class on Thursdays until mid December, this is a coincidence of course. :)

thanks for hosting me last night.  i had a very positive experience at HeatSync, and hopefully you guys were able to extract some useful information out of me.  i apologize for my extreme tardiness, but no one made any fuss about it.

i'm sure i'll be in town again sooner rather than later.  hopefully, we can have an advanced CNC class by the time i come back.

feel free to bother me ANY time that you guys have questions about machining.

Hey, Chris,

Thanks for your time.

This was a good class with just the right balance of hands-on with a little bit of theory thrown in.

Thanks, also, for patiently answering our questions.

Seconded! It was really great to see what that machine is capable of. I really had never pushed it that hard before, as I am used to the mini mill and the paper thin cuts it can give.

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us!!

Jasper
