Oklahoma Couple Gave Many Shelter from the Storm

MOORE, Okla. Ever since Monday's tornado blew Jerry Woods' house to
rubble, the 71-year-old swears, "We've seen angels."

.

The people who have brought water to him and his wife, Linda, 68. The
folks who have offered money, rooms and rides and who returned belongings
torn away on the winds of a deadly storm.

"Really," the disabled veteran and retired minister keeps telling those
offering help, "we're going to be fine."

.

But to more than a few grateful residents who live alongside the aging
couple on Cottonwood Drive and Whispering Oaks Boulevard, the true angels
are Jerry and Linda Woods.

.

A sign spray-painted on the crumbling bricks of the Woods home, in the
midst of a devastated landscape of twisted cars and crushed homes, tells
why:

"Thank You Jerry U Saved My Family Lives."

.

Not just one family, but several. Not just a few people, but 20, many of
whom were strangers. There were fathers, mothers and children carrying two
pet dogs. Urged on by the Woodses, they ran and crammed
shoulder-to-shoulder inside an old metal storm shelter built beneath
ground in the Woodses' yard and meant to hold only 12 people.

"Without the Woods, we would have died," neighbor Penny Phillips, 44, said
Wednesday, the first day residents were able to really begin cleaning up.
"If the Woods had not been there, we would have been in the house in the
middle by the stairs. There is no house. There are no stairs.

"Linda and Jerry saved our lives, and my children's lives and then my
dog."
