The Growth of Tourism Research and the Development of Adjectival Tourism:
Some Brief Thoughts on the Exponential Growth
and Legitimacy of Tourism Subdisciplines

.

.

A discussion has developed on an academic discussion group in the field of
tourism about the extensive use of adjectives to create new subdisciplines
in the field of tourism, a trait that I have dubbed as adjectival tourism
in my posting and research guides about subfields in tourism.

.

As in other fields, subdisciplines within a field are important and can be
numerous as in the field of history as noted below.

.

Of the fields I work with, Tourism is the only one that does this type of
extensive field classification. History is another field that does this
as every country and every major city has its field of history in addition
to a substantial collection of time period specializations and numerous
general subfields such as intelletual history and economic history.

.

In addition to tourism and hospitality, I work with sports, public health,
kinesiology and social work and each of these fields do not subdivide
nearly as much into "adjectival" subgroups, but do have subdisciplines.

.

Perhaps it is because tourism in generations past and not that far back
was simply travel and did not have as much theory and study behind it as
say philosophy or history or mathematics does. Technology has increased
the frequency, distance and sophistication of travel such that there is
much more to study these days. In addition the growth of tourism programs
at colleges and universities in a world requiring publication to survive
in academia has increased the need for faculty and graduate students to
get articles into journals to develop their academic credibility. Many
colleges not only require publication but in addition demand that
publications be in highly cited journals and in new fields of academic
research such highly cited journals are available in much fewer numbers
than is the case in fields with academic traditions covering several
centuries.

Hence in newer fields with a growing body of researchers and a more
limited group of core highly cited journals, those fields may exhibit
various developments in those fields structure such as the proliferation
of niches for original study and research in such fields including
tourism.

All search results from Google must be taken with a grain of salt as Google
searching is highly inaccurate from a number of points of view, but differences
over time that are this radical are perhaps a strong indication of some
researchable facts. We also now have Summon as a tool that permits
chronological limitation within a vast body of publications of all types.
Summon is a product produced by Serial Solutions which is a subdivision of
ProQuest.

Tourism has a great deal to offer the world as a discipline and area of
research, but content rather than labels will need to be the focus that
makes this discipline important and useful in the eyes of researchers in
other fields and there are many good studies that have been published in
this field and quite a few of them are in the niche tourism areas.

.

Some of the adjectival tourisms are very important subject disciplines
including areas of study such as wellness tourism, health tourism, medical
tourism, heritage tourism, dark tourism, history tourism, sports tourism
and museum tourism to name a few.

.

Other areas of adjectival tourism range from being peripheral to being a
stretch and quite amusing. I actually have created a heritage tourism
research quide and want to work on other tourism subfields in this way
down the road.

.

My heritage tourism guide link and the links to my other research guides can be
found here:

.

But on the other hand, how seriously as academic areas of study will
tourism subfields like these be taken?

This subfield could be hard to sell to some academic journals and will not
register with others.

.

.

New journals are being created all of the time and with time respect and
a pattern of highly cited articles will occur in more tourism journal
titles. As the development of new publishing trends such as publication
in digital archives and open access publications, the demands for
publication in highly cited journals may change in tourism and other
fields as well. Meanwhile lots of folks need to publish lots of content
so there will be a large pressure or friction between getting ones name in
print and producing work that extends the knowledge of ones field, not
only in the field of tourism, but in other expanding newer fields of
study.
