This post consists of two posts sent to the JISC discussion group named
DARK-TOURISM. The original posts builds on a message from a faculty
member who responds to a student request for knowing where to find
information on dark tourism by noting there is a great deal of information
on dark tourism to be found using Google Scholar. It turns out that the
student wants information on a more specific topic, the relationships and
impacts of media on dark tourism. The first post includes information
about finding and using terms related to dark tourism as well as providing
links to a range of tools that provide varying types and sources of
content on dark tourism, the second post covers academic internet search
tools and finds content in those on media and dark tourism. A Wikipedia
definition of dark tourism is included in the first post. The posts are

Wes Roehl is completely correct about a substantial body of content being
available from Google Scholar on this topic, but, first of all, I noticed
something in your message that if it is not a typo, it will keep you from
finding anything on this topic in Google Scholar or anywhere and that is
the lack of a space between dark and tourism, these must be treated as two
words and searched within quotation marks for an accurate search.

Another key consideration in doing research in this field is to realize
that not all researchers talk about or use this phrasem, "dark tourism"
in doing research that is pertinent to dark tourism. For example one
could be studying cemetary tourism, grief tourism, disaster tourism and so
forth.

Finally, I include a brief observation. Students in the modern world have
many computer skills but in many cases have not been taught much in K-12
or college regarding how to use bibliographic databases or academically
oriented internet search tools like Google Scholar and Google Books.
Many students express frustration and experience failure in research
projects because they do not know where or how to find information on
their topics. I can appreciate this problem as when I went to school all
research employed print journal indexes and library card catalogs and
since then, starting in 1980, I have had to relearn and then keep
relearning research skillls in computer and more recently internet search
tools. Temple Summon Search, for example, has only been with us for less
than one year. Also, for teaching research skills, the Sage Research
Methods database is an invaluable tool for institutions to acquire for
their members.

A final thought:
Asking questions is another skill that may not be taught well in school
and not well thought out by those seeking questions. Frequently, for
example, as in the case above, a person seeking information will ask a
very general question and figure that they will find the information they
need from the pot of sources or ballpark belonging to the general body of
knowledge rather than requesting help with the specific aspect of that
broad topic that they wish to explore. I once in the 1970's had a
student ask for books about commerce and books about economics. As the
search proceeded, it was clear that something was missing. Upon asking
what the assignment was, I learned that the student had to provide data
and information that would help decide if it was economically feasible to
start a weekly newspaper in Jolliet, Illinois. The student had decided
that he could find this information in the two types of books he had asked
for. He would have probably spent a very long time on that hunt for
buried treasure. I spend a great deal of time with live students in
person at the beginning of a consultation in hashing out with them what
the topic or research subject they actually are working on IS and what
concepts apply to each facet of this topic. Database vendors, when
teaching search technique, instruct users to write on paper the main topic
of their search and then pull out each aspect and list all appropriate
related terms.

these adolescents.
