We've been meeting the past several years at TechShop in Menlo Park.
Apparently, in 2011 TechShop killed the standing meeting reservations
and made signing up for the conference room limited to 2 weeks ahead.
They let us slip but now for 2013, it's being enforced.

This month the room is already reserved all day on the 20th, our
scheduled day, by TechShop. I've worked my way up through the power
structure to Clay, the manager there. Basically, he's not offering us
any help on having a guaranteed spot for the meeting on a day and time
of our choosing. The fact that at the SIG meetings between a quarter
and half of the attendees are TechShop members didn't seem to cut any slack.

Suggestions?

You can try Techshop San Jose. There seems to be a steady reservation for the Arduino meetup. Maybe you could invite the SJSU robot club.

The Hacker Dojo in Mountain View might be a
good place to meet.

Hacker Dojo is transitioning from the old building on Whisman
to the new building on Fairchild. It might be possible to
get in there, but somebody who is a member of DoJo has to
sponsor the meeting, and we have to figure out what the rules
are. What are the maximum occupancy rules, etc.

Right, the new, larger facility. While not as
popular as Tech Shop, the Dojo allows advanced
reservations, might open us up to new members,
and there are probably several Dojo members in
HBRC already. If not, I'll join Hacker Dojo
on our behalf.

The HBRC SIG meeting is the 2nd from the last Wednesday of the
month. In February, this would be on the 20th. There is no
SIG meeting on the 6th.

SIG stands for Special Interest Group which does not really
mean anything. It is an extra meeting with no show-and-tell
or planned presentation.

-Wayne

I'm currently a Dojo member and would be willing to sponsor hosting the SIG at Hacker Dojo.

With the move in progress, the spaces at the new Dojo haven't been finalized yet, but they should be by the time the SIG rolls around. The current rooms have capacities in the 15-40 person range; the rooms at the new Dojo will probably be a little bigger.

If we have the SIG at the Dojo, it will be open to all Dojo members, and we will have people wandering in and out to see what we're up to. Personally, I think this is awesome, but you're welcome to disagree.

The Dojo rules for events are pretty simple: a member must sponsor the event, dojo members must be welcome, attendees have to sign in, we have to obey the room capacity limit for fire code, and we have to clean up afterward.

The two week reservation limit is at all TechShop locations.  While San Jose would be great for me, I suspect it's not going to sit well with those farther north.  Not sure we want to be potentially switching locations from meeting to meeting.  Or have to change nights at relatively the last minute.  But I'm open.  We have three TS locations to choose from but I'm not sure how enthusiastic I'd be about SF. :)

That's been mentioned before but I'm not a member. I'm fine with it but
someone else will have to get the reservation.

The SIG is based on showing up.  :)  It's totally informal.  Just come, bring a robot if you want to show it off or get help working on it.  Oogle other people's robots or just BS.

The SIG is the next to last Wednesday (currently) and that would be the 20th this month.

The SIG, like the main meeting, is open and free to the public. We have
gotten TS members who wander in to see what we're doing so no problem
there. Currently at TS we have to clean up afterwards. Everyone signs
in for the meeting with nonmembers limited to the meeting space other
than going to the restrooms. What are the Hacker Dojo's rules regarding
age? We have several junior members who regularly attend the SIG?

Dear HBRC;

1. Since Hacker DoJo is in the middle of moving,  this month might be a bad choice for our sig meeting this month.
2. Techshop San Jose has parking issues for non-members.  There are nearby public lots, but not sure of the cost after 6pm. Also the meeting room is a little smaller.

Also guys, Techshop doesn't owe us anything.  Techshop is a business.  They host money making events in that space. So it is entirely by their generosity that they let us use the space for free.  The same thing goes for Google and CMU West before that.  We should be happy we ever get any space for free.  I think part of the problem at Techshop is our sig has become too big to be hosted there.

Since we are now collecting club dues, do you think the Tech Shop would be open to reserving us a room on a permanent schedule for a small fee?

We on the Hercules project appreciate Homebrew's advice and support. I'm glad to share that responsibility with you as well Austin. Just let me know if you need backup for hosting.

I think the problem is that TechShop is hosting more events for their own purposes as well as using the conference room for classes.  That apparently was why even when we had a reservation, a number of times we got bumped to other rooms.
