The software team over at I Heart Engineering is pleased to announce the availability of the first release candidate of a TurtleBot ROS Fuerte ISO. If you have a TurtleBot and some spare time, we can use your help testing to make this release meet its full potential.

http://www.iheartrobotics.com/2012/08/turtlebot-ros-fuerte-rc1.html

I have used earlier versions of this release. It works great even for conversion TurtleBots that run on normal roombas. Removes many of the annoyances of the turtlebot from the last full iso released. I have only tested the conversions that are using thier conversion boards detailed here http://www.iheartrobotics.com/2012/07/turtlebot-power-interface-shield.html  though I would not expect any issues with custom ftdi conversions or roosticks.

Thanks,
Jason

I'm getting a slow start on ROS. I did get Ubuntu 10.04 loaded on an
IBM laptop. Haven't figured out how to load ROS and a project.

I don't have a TurtleBot, but that might be a good place to start.

You mention an ISO, can I load it on my PC, and play with ROS? (I'm
missing something, can it be that easy?)

ALSO,
How about a Ubuntu/ROS build Saturday? I think someone mentioned
conducting a "workshop" for Linux/ROS at one time...

The ISO was really meant to be used on a made turtlebot. I am not sure if it could be used as a workstation ISO. I guess that is possible though it may not have everything you need. Let me ask around see if a workstation ISO does exist for that reason maybe even get one made(something else to add to my todo list).

As for your second thing which i am sure was directed at your local club members not me in far off texas. ONe of our members is going to be doing ROS classes. They are going to be done in some form of interactive way. I know have some interest from out of state guys already which may be handle by cameras and open voice chat of types. Once I have more solid details on that i can announce it here.

Hi Jason,

Well I wasn’t intending on buying the iRobot Create Robot, however I probably could borrow the club’s ‘bot.

What I’d like to see and study is a full ROS project, with all the nodes, topics, messages, clients, etc. in place.  Perhaps I can “dummy up” the Create ‘bot interface to allow the code to run, either edit the Create node to talk to my RoboClaw motor controller, or program an Arduino to act like a Create.  Possible?

Gotta start somewhere!  I’m not getting all the “repositories”, “sudo”, etc. needed to get ROS installed.  Maybe an ISO would cover all that?  The laptop that I have would serve as the ‘bots computer (not a workstation?)

Thanks for your reply.  I’ll see if I can encourage a “ROS Saturday” for HBRobotics.

(Can’t I just do this in DOS?)  ;<)

After having asked around. A workstation ISO is in the works. I won't give the dates I was given encase they slip.  As for the classes I was describing they will cover those things in general and are not focused on a certain robot. I will send a email to this list so if anyone is interested in viewing them and be part of them they can be.

Wow, that was a quick reply!

I’d certainly like to view them!  I (obviously) don’t have anything to contribute at this point.  And I don’t think I can “learn ROS in a week and report back on it”, as Bill Mania has done!
